Weekly Forex & Currency Update and Discussion #27 (November 13, 2020): Forex Reserves in SBP - $12.93 Billion (+1.50%); USD/PKR - 160.84 (+1.724%)

2020.11.20 16:59 AAAbbasi786 Weekly Forex & Currency Update and Discussion #27 (November 13, 2020): Forex Reserves in SBP - $12.93 Billion (+1.50%); USD/PKR - 160.84 (+1.724%)

The percentage changes in the title are compared to the figures seven days ago.
Alright, so from now on I'll have this discussion section up here to sort of explain what these numbers mean and whether they're good or bad for Pakistan's economy (the discussion part I referenced in the title). I don't think it'll be very good, but I hope I get better as time goes on.
So this week has been notable for bringing an end to the PKR's rally, and dramatically so. The USD/PKR parity just broke its bearish streak which lasted about two months (and watched the parity fall from 166 to 158) with Monday this week (November 16, 2020), when the PKR rose. The PKR has continued to fall throughout the rest of the week. This isn't much cause for worry, though. Experts say that the Rupee is in a corrective phase being initiated by the government to appease exporters who were troubled by the Rupee's rapid rise, and that this corrective phase should end soon, due to the positive economic indicators, such as high remittances, a low REER (Real Effective Exchange Rate. Having a low REER means the currency is undervalued), and the current account surplus, which all suggest the PKR should rise. The second major factor in the PKR's fall though is rising oil prices, which actually could be troubling in the long term two cents from an amateur economist who has tracked this stuff for a few months, expect Pakistan's forex reserves to rise greatly by the time we see our next update, since controlled falls in the values of currencies very often correlate with that.!<
This week also has been notable for Pakistan's foreign exchange reserves reaching record highs (at least relatively). The total amount of foreign exchange reserves inside Pakistan's central bank, the SBP, has risen to $12.93 billion, which is the highest that has been seen since February 2018! This week also saw another significant milestone, which is that the total forex reserves of the country (including those outside the State Bank) have risen above $20 billion. This level hasn't been reached since 2017.
Now, if you don't know much about forex reserves, you might assume that these numbers are exceptionally high ($20 billion does sound like quite a bit). This is false. The forex reserves of Pakistan are exceptionally low for a country our size. Bangladesh has $40 billion, Nigeria has $35 billion, and India has a staggering $570 billion, while we're more on par with Cuba and Finland.
The reason for this is that they were milked by previous governments (notably the PML(N) with Ishaq Dar) in order to keep the currency stable instead of letting the Rupee devalue naturally (the reason that devaluing is natural for the PKR is the fact that the Pakistani government has consistently run multiple deficits, both in regards to foreign trade (we import more than we export) and government spending (just in general spending more money than we make)). This heavily drained Pakistan's reserves to the point where they were nearly nonexistent, and is one of the main factors which has led to Pakistan's recent economic slowdown.
I would greatly appreciate corrections made by actual economists if I have made mistakes in the above summary.

2020.09.19 23:05 pog99 Alternative Hypothesis/ Ryan Faulk distorts South Africa under Apartheid.

Originally, my plan was to continue on with his article on Slavery in the United States. However, United Left, and some previous posts of mine, more or less already debunk the picture he paints in that article. I still plan to address though at a later date.
This article, perhaps even better than the last, show how thin Faulk's objectivity is. He opens and closes as if he was actually being holistic, but instead leaves a specimen blatant rationalization over a topic common among right-wing circles, the racial history and politics of South Africa. Lets not waste time.

The impact of European colonialism on the world is often described as being profoundly negative. The popular view is that Europeans came, stole resources, destroyed cultures, and committed mass murder all over the earth. By contrast, the prevailing view 100 years ago was that Europe was supplying the world with advanced institutions which they would not develop on their own and, in so doing, was civilizing the world.
Either of these theories might be true, and, to some extent, they both are. It is obviously correct that Europe took resources from places, killed some number of people, and ended various indigenous cultural practices. It is also obviously true that Europe set up various institutions, such as capitalism and democracy, in various parts of the world which had not developed these things on their own.
Does he think state control over, say, African labor during colonialism is Capitalism? Or that limiting Local chiefs from legislation such as in Colonial Nigeria is democracy?
A broad look at the empirical evidence suggests that European colonization helped most people more than it hurt them. Research has shown that the longer, or more heavily, a place was colonized by Europeans the richer it ended up being today (Eaverly and Levine, 2012; Feyrer and Sacerdote, 2006). Moreover, in the 20th century Africa, which is the center of much of the colonization debate, saw tremendous net gains in both wealth and population size (Manning, 2013; Roser; 2016)
Going through each of these, The Easterly study mainly looks at economic growth, and honestly doesn't suffice to explain the specific of African colonial experience in that regard. The second study notes how specific conditions of colonialism influences growth, while the two figures on African population growth shows this to be particularly so in the Post colonial era. Few would consider the first decades of African independence to be embodied by these numbers.
Here's an actual balanced set of studies and explanation on Colonialism in Africa.
I find this broad view compelling, but discussions on colonialism are rarely about the broad view. Instead, people like to talk about the anecdotal experiences of particular countries at particular times, and no anecdote is more often talked about than South African apartheid.
In this article, I will examine the history of South Africa as a case study in European colonialism.
Correction: You will gloss over it in a way that reflects your political biases.
Black Origins
The earliest people known to have occupied South Africa were a type of African called Khosians. Khosians are not the group of people most people think of when they think of Black South Africans. Those are Bantus. Bantu Africans and Khosians Africans look different, traditionally spoke different languages, and lived different sorts of lives. If we turned the clock back 4 thousand years, we would find that the southern half of the African continent was almost entirely inhabited by Khosians.
Some time roughly 3,000 years ago, Bantu Africans began expanding out of eastern and central Africa. As they expanded, they displaced many of the African peoples who had previously lived there. The degree to which this expansion occurred via violence, disease, out breeding, or other means, is unknown.
By 1,000 AD, the Bantu had reached most of South Africa. However, most of the people there were still Khosians. When the Portuguese arrived in South Africa in the 1400’s, they encountered very few Bantu.
As the Bantu expanded, they divided into tribes which then went to war with one another over land. In several African nations, a specific Bantu tribe came to dominate the others and then set up an empire. This occurred in South Africa as well. In the 1810’s and 1820’s, the Zulus conquered many neighboring African tribes and formed the Zulu empire. This empire went on to last almost until South Africa was entirely under White rule.
So a few things worth mentioning, that by 1000 AD, the current trends in a predominately Bantu Eastern half and a predominately Khoisan Western Half was already established.

The Rise of apartheid
While the South African government did not obtain independence from Britain until 1948, the beginnings of Apartheid can be traced back to the land act of 1913. This law made it illegal for Whites to sell land to Blacks and vice versa. By this point, Whites had already conquered or purchased the vast majority of South African land and this law was designed to make sure that this would not change.
Between this time and the 1960’s, the Apartheid government passed many laws which further segregated the races. For instance, inter-racial marriage was banned.
The most often talked about policy of South Africa was the creation of the Bantustans. These were designated “homelands” for Black South Africans. The Apartheid government forcibly moved millions of Blacks from multi-racial areas of South Africa into these Bantustans.
As explained in the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the people who established the Bantustans gave the following rational for their motives:
“NP politicians portrayed the homelands as a moral response to South Africa’s ‘multi-national’ reality. Apartheid theorists believed that South Africa was a country containing a number of nations, each developed to a greater or lesser degree. Freedom, they posited, could be realized only by providing the opportunity for each of these nations to exist and develop along its own lines.”
However, critics are quick to point out that the Bantustans consisted of less than a quarter of South Africa’s land even though Blacks made up an overwhelming majority of the nation’s population.
📷
Bantustans also suffered from tremendous poverty. As the Encyclopedia of Britiannia explains:
“The Bantustans were rural, impoverished, underindustrialized, and reliant on subsidies from the South African government. The original hope of the designers of the Bantustan system was that industries would be established along the Bantustan borders to utilize the cheap labour available nearby, but for the most part these hopes went unrealized. Other initiatives to create the illusion of viable economies for the Bantustans also broke down. To the end they were heavily dependent on financial aid supplied by the South African government. Poverty remained acute in the Bantustans, and child mortality rates were extremely high. Despite draconian control of where people were allowed to farm and the number of cattle they were permitted to have, Bantustan lands were oversettled, overgrazed, and hence afflicted with serious soil erosion.”
So far so good. Of course, for this to be an article by Faulk, things would have to sharply turn downward.
The Net Economic Impact of Bantustans
Such critics rarely mention the fact that as can be seen, in 1960, Black South Africans were exactly as poor as Sub-Saharan Africans generally were. By 1980 they were far richer (1).
📷
Given this, it does not seem fair to say, as some people do, that Bantustans caused Blacks to be poor. Prior to being forced into these areas, Black South Africans were just as poor as Sub-Saharan Africans generally were. Had Black South Africans been left totally alone, there is no reason to think that they would have become any richer than the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa let alone richer than they were under Apartheid. The land in Bantustans may have been bad. But this, evidently, was more than made up for by payments from the South African government.
The economic strain caused by the nature of the Bantustans is basically uncontested by actual experts as far as I know. The basis being that the clearly linked demographic disasters linked to their design have been established but ignored by the government since their early existence through the Tomlinson report and previous studies calling for reform.
Voerwerd refusing to spend the recommended budget to actually achieve independence as oppose to partial dependence for black labour, as well as the future migration to urban areas fueled by the increasingly poor conditions, suggest whatever aid given to the homelands were far from sufficient in any meaningful sense.
Height data suggests Living standards indeed deteriorated with the onset of particular labour exploitation events and that future improvements were linked to being apartheid of the same economic benefits that white South Africans were apart of. This would've been undermined had Apartheid not inadvertently fueled migration into white urban areas and new urban areas surrounding the homelands close to white populations.
Thus, whatever growth seen between Apartheid, which eventually became economically weakened from the 1970s to the 1980s, would be in spite of the laws imposed.
See here fore an overview on the arbitrary decision, poor conditions, and deceiving nature of Homeland "independence".

In conjunction with these external pressures, domestic terrorism was rapidly rising in South Africa during this time period. Following the incident in Sharpville, members of the ANC, the leading Black political party in South Africa, formed a military wing called the MK. Among its founders was Nelson Mandela, who was famously thrown in prison in 1962 for committing various acts of terrorism against the South African government.
The most famous incident of said terrorism perpetrated by the MK was the Church Street Bombing of 1983. This attack consisted of a car bomb being set off in the middle of the day on a busy street. 19 people were killed and over 200 were wounded. 📷
This is but one example from a list of many similar terrorist attacks that occurred, mostly in the 1980’s. During this time, the MK also gained a reputation for torturing prisoners.
On top of all this, in 1989 the South African president suffered a stroke that caused him to resign from office. F.W. De Klerk took his place after being elected by congress and was then re-elected by the electoral college.
De Klerk eliminated as many of the Apartheid laws as he could and, after freeing Nelson Mandela, entered into negotiations to end Apartheid.
Following the announcement of these negotiations, De Klerk’s party, the National Party, lost a national election to the pro apartheid Conservative Party. This was taken to indicate that the (White) people of South Africa did not want Apartheid to end and so De Klerk decided to hold a national referendum on whether or not to continue his negotiations to end apartheid.
The referendum was conducted in 1992 and the public was taken to have voted to end Apartheid. However, the referendum has been heavily criticized on several grounds. First, the South African government owned the media and this meant that the public only got a biased presentation of one viewpoint (Schonteich et al., 2003). Secondly, western powers were expected to plunge South Africa into a recession if they voted no (Wren, 1993). Thirdly, serious accusations of voter fraud have been made. Regardless, the negotiations continued and in 1994 Apartheid was ended.
Some Whites tried to resist the vote by setting up smaller areas of White control, but such efforts largely subsided after several Whites were executed on live TV by Black police officers. As one author wrote:
“the sight of three wounded AWB men pleading for their lives on live television and then shot in cold blood [by black policemen] had a powerful impact on the country’s Whites.”
Following the end of Apartheid, Nelson Mandela was elected president of the new South African government.
So there's an impression left here that'll pick up on later, but to give you a hint, Faulk doesn't tell you exactly who the executed whites were.
National Success Since Apartheid
Unfortunately, since Apartheid ended South Africa has declined on many metrics of national health.
Under apartheid GDP per capita usually grew roughly in sync with the rest of the World. This trend began to collapse in the 1980’s following the introduction of sanctions against the country. After apartheid ended, GDP per capita not only stagnated but, in fact, fell such that South Africans were poorer in 2002 than they were in 1982.
📷
World Bank
Of course what it also shows is an eventual recovery.
In 1980, South Africa has an unemployment rate of 9.8% (Murwirapachena et al., 2013). By 2002, that figure had risen to 30.4%, and in 2014 it was still nearly 3 times as high as it was in 1980 (Murwirapachena et al., 2013; World Bank) .
What he doesn't show is this disparity occurring before Apartheid ended, almost 10 years prior in fact.
Under Apartheid, South Africa had a longer average life expectancy than Sub-Saharan Africa generally did. Since Apartheid ended, life expectancy has stagnated and fallen such that life expectancy was almost 10 years higher in 1992 than it was in 2002.
📷
World Bank
Like the GDP, it saw a recovery.
Murder rates in South Africa began to rise in the 1970’s. Given the national turmoil of this time period, an increase in crime is unfortunate but not surprising. Perhaps less obvious, however, is the fact that murder rates exploded following the end of apartheid. As can be seen, this has disproportionately impacted Whites.
📷
(Thompson, 2004)
That is actually not supported by the data. Coloreds in South Africa make up roughly the same percentage as whites, yet their victimizations are night and day. That's actually the point of the study.
These declines have not just impacted White South Africans. The wealth gap between Blacks and Whites in South Africa was slightly lower under Apartheid than it is today.
📷(Leibbrandt et al., 2012)
This, taken in conjunction with the fact that GDP growth has slowed since Apartheid ended, implies that both Blacks and Whites in south Africa would likely be richer today if Apartheid were still in place.
Moreover, Black South Africans reported feeling less happy and less satisfied with their lives in 2008 than they did in the early 1980’s.
📷(Moller, 1998; Gaibie and Davids, 2009)
📷(Moller, 1998; Gaibie and Davids, 2009)
Thus, it seems that the economic, physical, and psychological health of South Africa has gotten worse since Apartheid ended.
The 1980s, mind you, being Apartheid at it's economical weakest compared to previous decades, going towards the trend of less government restrictions.
Kill the Boers
Anti-White racism has also risen since Apartheid ended. Today, there is a wave of mass murder being waged against the descendants of the Boers. This is how the situation was described by the president of Genocide Watch:
“Afrikaner farm owners are being murdered at a rate four times the murder rate of other South Africans, including Black farm owners. Their families are also subjected to extremely high crime rates, including murder, rape, mutilation and torture of the victims. South African police fail to investigate or solve many of these murders, which are carried out by organized gangs, often armed with weapons that police have previously confiscated. The racial character of the killing is covered up by a SA government order prohibiting police from reporting murders by race. Instead the crisis is denied and the murders are dismissed as ordinary crime, ignoring the frequent mutilation of the victims’ bodies, a sure sign that these are hate crimes*.*However, independent researchers have compiled accurate statistics demonstrating convincingly that murders among White farm owners occur at a rate of 97 per 100,000 per year, compared to 31 per 100,000 per year in the entire South African population, making the murder rate of White SA farmers one of the highest murder rates in the world.” Leon Parkin & Gregory H. Stanton, President – Genocide Watch14 August 2012
These murders are not only common place, they are also gruesome. Attie Potgieter was stabbed over 150 times while his wife and daughter, who were later executed, were made to watch.
📷
Dr. Louis John Botha was thrown into a crocodile pit and eaten alive.
📷
As a final example, consider the Viana family. The father and daughter were shot, the mother was raped and killed, and the son was drowned to death in a bath of boiling water.
📷
These murders reflect a more general anti-White sentiment which is ubiquitous in South Africa. Even leaders of the ANC, the party now in charge of the South African government, literally sang songs about killing White people as recently as 2012.
“South Africa’s ruling party on Tuesday defended the singing of an apartheid-era song with the words “Kill the Boer” in a row that has raised fears of increasing racial polarisation.” – Govender (2010)
White South Africans are also discriminated against by various South African institutions in order to make up for the damage that Apartheid institutions are thought to have done to Blacks.
First, there is discrimination in University admissions. Consider, for instance, this report on the University of Cape Town:
“The way in which the university has achieved this diversity, however, is somewhat controversial. To be admitted, white students must score the equivalent of straight A’s. Meanwhile, black and mixed-race students can get in with plenty of B’s. The University of Cape Town doesn’t make this policy a secret — admission cutoffs are listed by race in the prospectus.” – Kelto (2011)
Employers are encourage by the state to discriminate against Whites as well. The Black Economic Empowerment law set up the following point system in the country:
“Points are based on the percentage of blacks and other non-white ethnic groups in the company’s ownership and the skills training it gives to people in these groups. For companies, having a good BEE scorecard is often essential for business. The higher the BEE score they have, the more access they get to public markets and contracts.” – Iob (2013)
Finally, in may of this year South Africa passed the “land expropriation bill” which allows the government to force White South Africans to sell their land to the government at a price that the government decides. The rational behind this law is that it can undue the redistribution of land into the hands of whites which was solidified by the Land Act of 1913.
These factors have led White South Africans to abandon South Africa in large numbers. Since Apartheid ended, over half a million White South Africans have left the country. To put that in perspective, there are less than 5 million Whites in the whole country.
Some White South Africans are unable to emigrate on their own and are asking Western nations for Refugee status. The Canadian government has recently acquiesced to this request and allowed two White South Africans to come to Canada as refugees.
“31-year-old Brandon Huntley from Cape Town said he was constantly called a “white dog” and “settler” by Black South Africans back home. He was also robbed 7 times and stabbed three times by Black South Africans since his home country ended Apartheid in 1994. “There’s a hatred of what we did to them and it’s all about the color of your skin,” Huntley told the Canadian Immigration and Refugee Board. The evidence Huntley provided showed “a picture of indifference and inability or unwillingness of the South African government to protect White South Africans from persecution by African South Africans,” Board Chairman William Davis said.” –
White South Africans are also asking for refugee status from the EU which, in recent years, has allowed tens of thousands of middle eastern and African refugees to cross its borders.
I won't sugarcoat the the economic and social issues of whites currently in South Africa. The problem is, aside from the victimization of Afrikaners (farmers specifically) by murders, the general economic position of whites in South Africa hasn't changed.
As for white emigration, his figure combines the total number of whites (roughly 300k) that have left between 1986 (that is before apartheid fell) and 2000, and roughly 300k between 2000-2015.
Overall, the white population only slightly shrank between 1980 and 2015.

If conquest is not a legitimate means to acquire land, the Zulu and similar Bantu tributes did not justly own South African land, nor did any other tribe of the last few hundred years. After all, this land was conquered from Khoisan and older Bantu tribes.
Moreover, if the Zulu did steal the land, it is not clear that Apartheid was in the wrong for taking it from them. Is it wrong to steal something which is stolen from the thief who stole it?
If, on the other hand, conquest is a valid way to acquire land, then White South Africans had a perfectly legitimate claim on it. This might be taken to imply that there is also nothing wrong with modern Black South Africans taking land from Whites. However, conquering land via war is not the same thing as using a false political narrative about the supposed negative effects of apartheid to take land. Moreover, forcing White people into a society that hates and mass murders them is not analogous to putting Blacks in bantustans which, as we have seen, were not as bad as they are often made out to be.
I consider the morality of conquest to be a difficult question and I won’t try to resolve it here. What I will say is that it is very hard to come up with any principled moral answer which would justify the totality of what is being done to White South Africans.
Where to begin?
  1. Assuming the validity of the right of conquest, that only applies to the right to claim land or wield power over it. That doesn't exempt moral considerations on particular acts directed towards the previous occupiers. That is, if the Zulu Empire lead to the displacement and abuse of other groups like the Khoisan, then they can be morally judged on those grounds. Same can be easily said for victims of the Anglo-Boer wars under concentration camps.
  2. "White South Africans" didn't conquer Bantu lands leading to their annexation, it was the British specifically. Boers more so are responsible for the displacement of the Khoisan in the Western Cape.
  3. "Forced Removals" weren't the direct result of being conquered, annexation was. Forced removals, then, can be viewed as a separate act apart of conquest from war and as a decision by an already formed government. It was these laws that form the basis of land claims, not British colonization in and of itself.
  4. There is noting "false" that was validly demonstrated regarding the effect of Bantustans had on the black population. Nor were the Bantustans "not that bad", as most moved out by 1986.
Political Violence
Another important question is whether or not the political violence initiated by the MK against White South Africans was justified.
Apartheid set up various laws, some of which I would consider unjust. Most importantly, Apartheid severely restricted the right of Blacks to protest. This was the justification that Mandela used for resorting to violence. He had no other choice.
This may be true, and if you think that apartheid’s policies were sufficiently horrible this may justify violence, but there is no way that the indiscriminate violence against innocent and random White south Africans that the MK engaged in can be justified. Their activities, especially in the 1980’s, were morally equivalent to any other act of mass murder.
Further more, as we have seen, Apartheid’s actions were not nearly as bad as they are often thought to have been.
This is what I was alluding to earlier, that terrorism among the Anti-Apartheid movement was directed towards whites mostly. While there were indeed anti-white motivation fueling the movement, the overwhelming majority were black. See here for an understanding.
This whole section is a strawman.
Evaluating Apartheid
Even if Apartheid improved the material and psychological conditions of Black Africans,
It didn't. De facto economic integration efforts was what lead to observed improvements.
On the other hand, the material benefit that Whites brought to South Africa, and Africa generally, was truly immense. Were it not for colonialism, most Africans alive today would have never even been born.
In South Africa, that population growth came from a reaction of concentrated poverty, not wealth.
Fundamentally, the problem of African colonialism is the problem of multi-racialism. So long as Whites allowed Blacks to continue to live in Africa, which could have only been prevented with a massive and horrific genocide, Black Africans were going to resent them.
Except in Botswana, and to a lesser extent Namibia. Both with significantly different approaches to race relations.
As Apartheid shows us, this is true even if the Whites improve the conditions of the Blacks. There will always been a feeling that Whites do not belong there and Blacks will always resent the invariably superior material conditions of Whites.
Probably because many were removed from and forced away from Urban living.
Colonialism of the United States only worked because there aren’t many Indians around anymore.
I get the feeling this is part of his Bitchute video on the topic.
The kind of colonialism practiced in Africa in which Whites would be permanent but ruling minorities in a majority Black nation was never sustainable without an uncomfortable measure of totalitarianism and even then ethnic conflict was still common place.
Again Botswana.
The violence surrounding colonialism was rarely, if ever, one sided. Today, there is a massive level of systemic racism against White South Africans. The fact that this racism is not covered in Western media offers a stark contrast with how the media covered the sins of Apartheid.
The sources of the farm murders and affirmative actions were News24, a relatively left leaning SA news source, NPR, Reuters, Voice of America and the Dailymail. Only one source was an "alternative one", which reported the murder a whole year after News24 did and relied on a mainstream Afrikaner-news report.
These get attention by "Western media".
Overall, the problems of South Africa, both in terms of Blacks resenting their White rulers under Apartheid and Whites experiencing racism today, come from the inherent difficulties of having a multi-racial society. In this sense, the story of South Africa contains lessons not only about colonialism but also about more general and pressing questions of immigration and diversity.
Or, you know, what happens when you don't consider the role of Black Africans in your government, unlike Botswana.

2020.09.15 01:26 Thatweirdnerd25 Dating Apps/Relationship scam?

I doubt you all have any advice on what to deal with this, so I just wanted to vent about this event.
I believe my mother is falling for a "Nigerian Prince scam", returned check scheme. Now, this started back in August. So my mother was looking for a romantic partner on a dating app that's more advertised to Spanish-speaking people or Facebook, and got into contact with this man that lives in Nigeria.
It turns out that he supposedly runs a foundation to help kids back in his home country, and in general my mom has enjoyed talking to him, albeit in broken english on both ends. He exists (he sent us a valid Ugandan voter ID), his past seems to be somewhat consistent according to posts from other social media, his organization's pictures are unique according to TinEye, but nonetheless my warning flags were tingling when she told me about him. I believe that this is a scam: that person hopes to fly here, into the US, to continue his foundation work. My mom hasn't been requested money, although he has offered to send money to her (I believe he could be trying to do a reverse check scam).
Now, in my investigation, I discovered a bunch of red flags: his web domain was registered (or re-) August via a WHOIS, his site also seems unfinished, the Twitter and Instagram accounts in his organization's have been suspended, etc, so in regards to that, I just told my mom that those were massive red flags and to proceed carefully.
I have no idea what I'm even asking. I just thought that this has the possibility of being a scam.

2020.08.13 10:03 pog99 "Aryans sailed to Africa and brought them Iron!"

Where to begin?
Much like my last post on lynching, this was an old internet page that I thought was too stupid to be true.
Here's the first slip and fall into logic and research.
Notice the high instance of R1b in the exact same spot as the origin of the spoked wheel chariot. The most likely way such a genetic hotspot could exist after all those centuries of invasion was if it was the source.
But what could be the reason for the R1b hotspot in Africa, along the Camaroon/ Nigerian border? According to the Chariot map, Aryans were crossing the channel into England around 500BC, so they must have had some seafaring capability in the 6th century BC.
He believes that, paralleling the expansion of Aryans into the British Isles, Aryans used their sailing skills to arrive in Central Africa.
Before anyone starts playing Devil's advocate, it's been known since 2010 at least that the variant of R1b, R-V88, is closer to divergent lingeages within the continent by various Nomadic groups than to Modern Day Europeans or old Aryan DNA. Closest variants outside of Africa are among the least "Aryan" parts of Western Asia, Sardinia and Lebanon.
This post was made in 2015, and had he read deeper into the genetic he wouldn't have made this post.
"The Sao civilization may have begun as early as the sixth century BCE, and by the end of the first millennium BCE, their presence was well established south of Lake Chad and near the Chari River."
[This is the same area as the R1b hotspot]
"Little is known about the Sao's culture or political organisation: They left no written records and are known only through archaeological finds and the oral history of their successors in their territory. Sao artifacts show that they were skilled workers in bronze, copper, and iron. Finds include bronze sculptures and terra cotta statues of human and animal figures, coins, funerary urns, household utensils, jewelry, highly decorated pottery, and spears. The largest Sao archaeological finds have been made south of Lake Chad.
... Oral histories add further details about the people: The Sao were made up of several patrilineal clans who were united into a single polity with one language, race, and religion. In these narratives, the Sao are presented as giants and mighty warriors who fought and conquered their neighbors."
[my bold, italics. ]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sao_civilisation
There is no evidence of iron working anywhere in Africa before this date, yet not only did this group suddenly have skilled metal workers, but they were using it to make coins and jewelry. Creating valid money is something native Africans have not mastered to this day.
Okay, if you were able to withstand the insipid nature of this stream of logic, let me help you.
The Wikipedia page, as of now (not sure what it was like in 2015) clearly shows archaeological work indicates a local development (even hyper-diffusionist Dierk Lange notes how the archaeology, by itself, supports a local development), in fact the lack of writing would make it quite odd to associate its development to such a foreign people.
This data was established at least a decade before this post, another case of lazy research.
There are three major Sub Saharan sites of Iron Metallurgy around 500-400 B.C, Nok in Central Nigeria, Walalde in Senegal, and Urewe in the modern Great Lakes region of Central-East Africa.
The Sao isn't one of those for this interval. The earliest appearance of Iron alone anywhere in the area is Daima at a much later date than Taruga at Nok. Metallurgy for the Sao seems much later. These good, such as coins (which I haven't seen in primary sources) are most likely imported.
Moving on with the stupidity.
"In summary, there is no proof that iron working technology was taken across the Sahara into sub-Saharan Africa; nor is there proof of independent invention. ...
Even though the origin(s) of iron smelting are difficult to date by radiocarbon, there are fewer problems with using it to track the spread of ironworking after 400 BC. In the 1960s it was suggested that iron working was spread by speakers of Bantu languages, the original homeland of which has been located by linguists in the Benue River valley of eastern Nigeria and Western Cameroon. It has been since been shown that no words for iron or ironworking can be traced to reconstructed proto-Bantu..."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_metallurgy_in_Africa
The Benue River is the river the R1b invaders would have had to go up to reach the R1b hotspot. That hotspot is right at the point the Benue river crosses from Nigeria into Cameroon. In other words, iron working magically appeared in a spot, and the blacks that lived there did not invent it because they did not invent the words to describe it, instead they borrowed the words from whomever did.
Okay, we already established that the earliest SSA Iron sites are not R1b "hotspots". Here we have a blatant example of manipulation of the Wikipedia entry, where it clearly shows researhc that traces origins for the words to either central Chadic or Proto-Bantu.
-
Although some assert that no words for iron or ironworking can be traced to reconstructed proto-Bantu,[29] place-names in West Africa suggest otherwise, for example (Okuta) Ilorin, literally "site of iron-work". The linguist Christopher Ehret argues that the first words for iron-working in Bantu languages were borrowed from Central Sudanic languages in the vicinity of modern Uganda and Kenya,[30] while Jan Vansina[31] argues instead that they originated in non-Bantu languages in Nigeria, and that iron metallurgy spread southwards and eastwards to Bantu speakers, who had already dispersed into the Congo rainforest and the Great Lakes region.
-
The Sao were urban in a land of herdsman and subsistence farmers.
Ah, so the Vikings grew Pearl Millet and kept herds of African cattle?
"Even today the remarkable culture of the Kotoko city-states, located south ofLake Chad, impresses visitors. According to oral traditions collected byanthropologists, the founders of the city-states were the Sao from whom theKotoko claim to descend. ...Yet, the question ofthe emergence of the Sao urban culture as such and hence of socialcomplexity remained until recently largely unsolved.
Followers of the Culture History School interpreted the Sao urban culture onthe basis of architectural features, furniture, and techniques as remnants ofan old Mediterranean civilisation that was once wide-spread across theCentral Sudan. It had been swept away “by the Islamic overflow and youngermigrations but retained by splinter groups and pagans as sunken culturalremnants”. On the basis of preliminary archaeological and oral dataspecialists of the Sao-Kotoko culture also first advanced the hypothesis of aMiddle Eastern origin of the town builders south of Lake Chad.
Nowadays, archaeologists agree on a purely local process leading gradually tosocial complexity. They suggest that the Sao-Kotoko towns were protected bytown walls in a middle phase only. According to most recent archaeologicalstudies, the first proto-urban settlements emerged at the western andsouthern fringes of the firgi flood plains around 500 BC. Initially, archaeologists explained this development with a climate model according towhich increasing desiccation led to urbanisation. Yet, further results showedthat the aquatic environment had not substantially changed by the middle ofthe first millennium. Therefore it seems necessary to search for alternativeexplanations for the emergence of social complexity in the Lake Chad area."[my bold italics][In other words, right around the time that Aryans were sailing into England, a group appeared up a river in Africa that started a process of urbanization that can't be explained by environmental reasons. At that very point advanced iron working also just happened to appear.]
"In view of it being impossible to ascribe tothe Sao a distinct linguistic identity, it should be considered whether theethnonym did not originally refer precisely to those people who introducedcity-building and social complexity into the region of Lake Chad."
"Everywhere in the former Borno Empire, the most prominent pre-Islamicinhabitants are called Sâo, Sâu, Sô or Sôo. They are said to having been giantswho built large buildings and produced high, thick-walled clay pots. HenceKanuri consider them town builders and producers of much larger containersthan in use nowadays. In Kawar and southern Fezzan they are thought tohave been the builders of mighty castles. The Kotoko likewise ascribe tothem the imposing clay architecture, the former town walls, and the large claypots that served as storage and burial containers. We are apparently facedhere with old and relatively precise traditions common to Kanuri and Kotoko, which refer to craftsmen no longer in existence."
"The Sao were not at all the autochthonous inhabitants of the Borno Empire asis often assumed. Various traditions confer to them a far-away place of origin..."
The passages are quotes from Dierk Lange, an improbably Hyper-diffusionist that connect medieval African states to Assyrians and the like. Here Lange argues, rather than Aryans, that semites in some shape or form contributed. By comparison Lange is on firmer ground, where at least there are legitmate cultural parallels. The Issues with Lange is the lack of evidence of diffusion beyond his linguistics.
So we see here, this commenter believes that sailing the Benue (from which starting point from the Niger?) Aryans brought Iron to Sub Saharan Africa (which has no relation to the "hotspots") in a manner he speculates to be a "colony" (something that was harder for advanced Europeans to pull off due to severe disease).
The genetic remnants?
"The Bororo Fulani, tall, thin nomads with lighter complexions than their sedentary kin, drive herds of cattle through this region."["this region" = northern Cameroon]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_No...)#Demographics#Demographics)
Ah, the Fulani. A favorite of the Hamitic Hypothesis now reinvented to serve as "Aryans". There are multiple problems. One, the Fulani are Niger-Congo Speakers that arrived to Cameroon in the late Medieval age, not 500 B.C. Two, the highest concentrations are in Chadic speaking groups) in Cameroon, not the Fulani (except for Fulani in Eastern Africa who are thus closer related to local Chadic speakers compared to Western ones). Fulani do seem to provide information on the origin of r1b.
I don't have any particular political or ideological axe to grind, but I thought it was a very interesting theory. It makes me wonder if in 2000 years someone might put forth a similar theory about the genetic peculiarities and myths in the southern tip of Africa.
Anyone familiar with anything you brought up would be aware of these blatant omissions and asinine speculation.

2020.08.05 02:29 gregathon_1 If someone tells you we live in a patriarchy, show them this post.

According to a study done in 2012, men usually receive 63% longer sentencing for the same crime than women do. [1] There are clearly large gender gaps favoring women throughout the sentence length distribution. Another meta-analysis found that it was advantageous for defendants to be physically attractive, female, white, and of high socioeconomic status. [2] Men receive capital punishment 100x as much as women. [3] In a study done by the University of San Fransisco Law, it found that women guilty of capital murder were far less likely to receive the death penalty than men who had done capital murder and that people who killed women were more likely to receive capital punishment than people who killed men. [4]
In the U.K., women are only jailed for serious crimes as the new Justice Secretary revealed in July of 2018. [5] While men get jailed for the most minor offenses, such as smoking weed in their own home (and get large prison sentences), women only get jailed for actually serious crimes such as murder, treason, or robbery. This is not even a new concept, as in the 1800s, whatever crime a woman committed, her husband served time for it. [6] How is this patriarchy? Feminists seem to think that chivalry was misogynistic or sexist against women, but, in reality, it protected and privileged them in almost every way.
Faculty in STEM fields have demonstrated a preference for female applicants over equally qualified male applicants by a factor of 2:1. [7] If women were being pushed away from STEM, how would this be the case?
A paper just published in the British Journal of Psychology led by Steve Stewart-Williams found that people respond to research on sex differences in ways that favor females. In two studies, participants were asked to read a popular science article that was experimentally manipulated to suggest that either men or women have a more desirable quality (for example, men/women are better at drawing or men/women lie less often). Participants evaluated the female-favoring research more favorably than male-favoring research. Specifically, participants found the female-favoring research more important, more plausible, and more well-conducted and found the male-favoring research more offensive, more harmful, more upsetting, and more inherently sexist. This pro-female bias was observed among both male and female participants, and in study two, the researchers replicated the results in a south-east Asian sample. [8]
We have also found that people have a stronger desire to censor science that disfavors women. In this study, participants were asked to read a series of passages from books and to decide whether the text should be censored (for example, whether it should be removed from the library, whether a professor should not be allowed to require it for class). One passage argued that either men or women make better leaders. The results showed that people wanted to censor the book more when it argued that men make better leaders than women than when it argued the opposite. [9]
According to a study done by Developmental Science, on the development of implicit and explicit gender attitudes, found that both sexes are significantly biased towards females over males. “Findings demonstrate that implicit and explicit own-gender preferences emerge early in both boys and girls, but implicit own-gender preferences are stronger in young girls than boys. In addition, female participants’ attitudes remain largely stable over development, whereas male participants’ implicit and explicit attitudes show an age-related shift towards increasing female positivity. Gender attitudes are an anomaly in that social evaluations dissociate from social status, with both male and female participants tending to evaluate female more positively than male.” [10]
A meta-analysis found that women, on average, receive substantially more help than men, and men give more help than they receive. [11] This is backed up by the literally innumerable amount of money spent on female causes. For instance, federal and state money subsidizes more than 15,000 women’s studies courses versus a measly 91 men’s studies courses. In Canada, Canada’s Department of Education helps fund the Canadian equivalent of the National Organization for Women 7 and every Canadian province has a Women’s Directorate (Ontario’s has a staff of fifty-one and a budget of $8 million per year). A Google Scholar search for misogyny yielded 114,000 results, whereas a search for misandry yielded only 2,340. The data is pretty clear: people are vastly more sympathetic toward women and their causes than they are to men.
Boys also receive vastly more corporal punishment than girls (such as getting paddled), along with African-Americans and Hispanics. [12] Why do boys have to receive violent education when women who misbehave and do the exact same offense do not?
Girls earn significantly better grades than boys in the education system unlike what is found in scholastic achievement tests, according to a meta-analysis done by the University of New Brunswick.[13] Another study done by OECD confirmed this very fact: when the teacher does not know that the student is a boy, his grade is put at least ⅓ higher than it already is. [14] This shows a significant bias towards girls in terms of grading since it has nothing to do with scores.
The pressure to be masculine amongst men is also significantly greater than the pressure to feminine amongst girls. The teenage suicide rate amongst gays is 3x as high as the suicide rate amongst lesbians. [15] This implies that effeminate men are more likely to get bullied than women who act more manly. Think about it: if a girl showed up to school or work dressed manly (say with a suit), no one would bat an eye; but, if a boy showed up anywhere with a dress, he would be completely laughed at and made fun of.
Additionally, in family courts, women win 90% of all child custody cases. [16] This is plain and simple misandry (or sexism against men) in the court system, and no one talks about it. There is absolutely no reason why a woman has more of a right to her own child than a man, and to claim otherwise would be discriminatory.
Men also pay 97% of alimony (or financial support to their spouse post-divorce). [17] Men don’t make that much more money than women (considering the wage gap is not that large), and, therefore, should not have to pay that much alimony. Once again, plain and simple misandry.
Men are also exploited as cash machines by other women in relationships. 70% of U.K. women would instantly change their minds about leaving a boring man if he won a lottery jackpot. [18] 78% of US women said a partner with a steady job was the most important trait in a future spouse. [19] 75% of women say that they would have a problem with dating someone who doesn’t have a job, and only 4% of women would go out with an unemployed man. [20] In China, women expect men to provide apartments along with a cash marriage offer in order to have a relationship. [21] Women are seen as sex objects, but men are seen as success and money objects. A man’s success and wealth matter more than his individual character.
In life-threatening situations (such as abandoned ships), women and children are always saved first. [22] When a man and woman fail to protect, the results are always different. For instance, when a male captain failed to control his ship and the resultant oil spill destroyed wildlife, the names Exxon Valdez and Captain Joseph Hazelwood became infamous. Captain Hazelwood was put on trial, fined, and imprisoned. He became the pitiful butt of jokes by Johnny Carson and Jay Leno. His drinking was highlighted. The fact that a sudden schedule change had pushed an exhausted captain and crew back to sea and into a ruined career was ignored. So, what happens when a female captain does that?
When a female air traffic controller failed at her job and the resultant air crash killed thirty-four humans (not wildlife), her colleagues took her to a hotel to shield her from publicity. They spent days comforting her. Instead of being the butt of jokes, she received humor therapy, paid for by taxes. Rather than sue her, the Federal Aviation Administration provided her with a counselor. Instead of publicizing her name, the National Transportation Safety Board cooperated in keeping her identity secret from the public. To this day, her name remains virtually unknown. Headlines in papers from the Los Angeles Times to The New York Times focused on her grief, not the grief of the families of those killed or the ruined lives of those injured, for instance: “Controller Was Stricken by Grief, Tears after Crash.” If this is true, then how would the misogyny theory make sense? We clearly accept female error a lot better than we do male error, so this would point to an entirely different narrative than most feminists push.
Male genital mutilation is also legal, but female genital mutilation is not. While some forms of female genital mutilation are a lot worse than male genital mutilation, both are not O.K. If you look at the procedure of circumcision, it is quite horrible; the baby is screaming and crying as his penis’ foreskin is retracted using a clamp. [23] - Warning: Graphic The fact that male babies should be allowed to get tortured and reduced sexual pleasure should be something eliminated and removed from society if we want to get anywhere towards gender equality.
In terms of domestic violence, 70.7% of domestic violence is female-perpetrated [24]; and according to the CDC, 53.3% percent of men had been the victims of intimate partner violence in the past 12 months. [25] So, the question remains: why are there no domestic violence shelters for men? Even though it is true that a lot of domestic violence against females go unreported, the media still paints domestic violence as a female-only issue when the statistics (of reported cases) shows otherwise.
Every time, women are killed somewhere, in the news headline, it is almost unanimously made clear that, indeed, a woman was killed; but when a man is killed, he is usually referred to as a person., Take for instance, the Chibok schoolgirl kidnappings where hundreds of schoolgirls were kidnapped by a terrorist group called Boko Haram [26]; everyone from Barack and Michelle Obama [27] to the U.K. government [28] denounced the kidnappings as misogynistically intended kidnappings made to take away education from girls. However, almost none of these girls were actually killed; they were put into an arranged marriage with the chance to escape. The boys, on the other hand, were burned and killed; and mind you, they were called “people,” “students,” and “villagers,” not “boys” or “men.” [29], [30], [31], [32], [33], [34], [35] In one of the reports written by AFP, it is said: “A hundred and six people, including an old woman, have been killed by the attackers, suspected to be Boko Haram gunmen…” [36]
According to an Oxfam protection survey, 41% more killings were of men and boys by Boko Haram than of women and girls [37]; the number was even higher amongst adults, with 77% more men killed than women. Whenever girls are killed (or kidnapped), their gender must be mentioned since it has to do with that; but when it’s boys killed, it’s just a group of individuals dead and must never have anything to do with their gender. Studies have confirmed this as well, that female victims (and especially white females) are focused most in the media. [38]
This plays into the concept of “male expendability,” or the idea that in society, female life matters more than male life. In 1998, shortly after the Rwandan genocide, Hillary Clinton gave a speech in El Salvador, saying: “Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat.” [39] This implies that the men who died aren’t really the victims of war; it is women who matter because they are impacted by the death of men, not because the men, in and of themselves, died.
The “male disposability hypothesis” is also backed up by many studies. In 2016, a study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science where it found that people would be significantly more willing to sacrifice men than women in times of crisis; they are also more willing to inflict harm upon men rather than women. [40] A study done in Poland (in 2017) found that people were 3 times as likely to deliver severe electric shocks to men when asked by an experimenter to do so than to women. [41] A study done in 2000, found that amongst vehicular homicides, drivers who kill women very often get much higher sentences than drivers who kill men. [42] This is also true in regards to all crimes; according to a study done in 2004, criminals who victimized females received vastly more punishment than those who victimized males. [43] A husband whose wife died is way more likely to commit suicide and be depressed than a wife whose husband died. [44]
It explains why 93% of workplace fatalities are male [45]; men are forced to do dangerous jobs, which gets them killed and society simply doesn’t care. This is confirmed by a study done by the USBLS, which found that the most hazardous jobs (the ones with the highest-death percentage) were almost exclusively male [46], [47]:
Firefighting
99% male
Ironworking
99% male
Trucking
98% male
Construction
98% male
Logging
98% male
Coal Mining
97% male
Whereas the least hazardous jobs (ones with the lowest-death percentages) were always almost completely exclusively female [48]:
Secretary
99% female
Receptionist
97% female
The Jobs Related Almanac ranked 250 jobs from best to worst based on a combination of salary, stress, work environment, outlook, security, and physical demands. 24/25 out of these jobs were 95-100% male-dominated. [49] Military deaths are largely male as well. According to the FAS, in the Korean War, 99.9% of all deaths were male. In the Vietnam War, once again, 99.9% of all deaths were male. During the Persian Gulf War, 95% of all deaths were male. During Panama, 100% of deaths were male. During OEF and OIF, 98% percent of deaths were male. Why is this such a persistent theme?
“I think women are too valuable to be in combat.” - Casper Weinberger, U.S. Secretary of Defense (under Reagan)
“It is not appropriate for women to engage in combat... to be captured or to be shot, as opposed to pushing a button someplace in a missile silo.” - Sandra Day O’Connor, Supreme Court Justice
“If there’s a fire at sea and you have to slam down a hatch to save the ship, you might do it on a man. But on a woman…”
According to the feminist, this must be due to sexism, since women have to stay in the kitchen. I also don’t think, however, that being brutally killed in war is all that much better than being a caretaker due to evolutionary instincts. As all this evidence (including the quotes) shows, it is female life being placed as more valuable than the male life, that is an explanation for this male disposability.
If feminism is about, “aiming to establish and achieve the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes,” then why does it never talk about these issues? Why does it stay silent on the issues that really matter? Why are there no gender studies classes on any of these topics? It’s almost as if the media, politicians, and radicals don’t actually care about the equality of the sexes, but are only looking to drive an oppression narrative to which it can gain political standings off of.
These are serious examples of structural sexism that have long-standing impacts, and all we can ramble about is how it’s harder to pronounce ‘woman’ rather than ‘man?’ Or how insults against a man in English also insult women in some subtle way?
Saying the word ‘policeman’ will discourage little girls and even grown women from becoming police officers, but calling the force of evil that oppresses women after men (patriarchy) and the force of good that will bring gender equality after women (feminism) is completely fine? We can’t carry on this absurdity as a society of claiming structural oppression against women. We have to focus on real issues, and then truly work to achieve some form of gender equality.
This idea that patriarchy exists and male privilege is a harmful myth that helps no one. Men who want to feel guilt for something that they’re not even guilty of in the first place are plain and simple simps. They want to pretend like they share guilt for all female problems.
Response to common feminist myths:
Some feminists may object by pointing out the wage gap, and that women earn less than men (specifically 77 cents to the dollar a man makes). But, the reason is that this merely divides the annual salary of men with women. It does not take into account career professions, where women have statistically been shown to go to careers that pay less and careers where men get paid more vice-versa. [50] For the same job and qualifications, the wage gap is 98 cents to the dollar a man makes. [51] However, this still does not account for the number of hours worked, which men work a lot more of. [52] Also, it has been found that young, single, and childless women earn 17% more than men. [52] Going by feminist standards, we have just proved that we live under a misandrist matriarchy! Asking why male CEOs make more than female CEOs is seriously like asking why female models get paid more than male models. Some women get paid 180 grand to sell feet pics. [53] Seriously, taking one picture a day or week of their own feet and getting paid fortunes. The “pay gap” is something that is really appalling because it displays a lack of basic common sense.
Women have been, evolutionarily speaking, caretakers. [54] In hunter-gatherer societies, women gathered and took care of kids, whereas, men cooperatively hunted. [55] So, they often make career choices that make less money and sometimes, even no money. Women, therefore, naturally thrive under jobs such as nursing or even abstinence of jobs altogether in the pursuit of taking care of offspring. The fact that women tend to choose fewer STEM careers is not the result of cultural prejudice because a study done in countries (where there’s higher national gender equality) found that sex differences in the magnitude of relative academic strengths and pursuit of STEM degrees rose. [56] This isn’t sexism, it’s just basic biology.
But, why do women hold less than 25% of governmental positions in the U.S. nationwide? Why can’t women become leaders like men? Why do men take up the top 1%? The problem with this is that it ignores everything else. Men take up 70% of the homeless [57] and are 2x as likely to be drug-addicted. [58] This takes up about 15% of the population, according to the CDC. [59] So, the fact that men take up the top 1% means absolutely nothing if they also take up the bottom 15%. Also, looking at men in government and saying they have all the power is like looking at women in grocery stores and saying they have all the food. It’s a matter of choice, not adding a gendered prefix next to a suffix.
Plus, most of these congressmen, CEO’s, etc… have wives and children that benefit from the money that they make; the spouses of CEO’s end up inevitably doing less work than the CEO’s themselves. In Japan, overwork resulting in death is called karoshi. So, far, in the past 20 years, sudden deaths amongst executives have gone up by a lot. And, as usual, men in their 40’s take up the vast majority of these deaths. [60]
Another method that feminists use to justify patriarchy is rape culture; men have the privilege of not being raped whereas women do. However, this is just false; men are actually raped way more often than women when accounting for the number of prison rapes (over 900,000 male inmates raped), according to The Guardian and the American Public Health Association. [61], [62]
Feminists will also bring up slut-shaming against women as an example of societal sexism against women; women are slut-shamed for being promiscuous, whereas men can be as promiscuous as they want. But, this is actually completely incorrect. In fact, a study done by George Washington University found that on Facebook, promiscuous males are slut-shamed much more than promiscuous women. [63] And for those that do slut-shame women, a large majority are women themselves. [64]
But, what about sexual harassment? Don’t women get sexually harassed and men don’t have to deal with that? Male privilege! Actually, let’s look at the facts. Since 1988, making a dirty joke, looking at a woman’s short skirt, calling a female employee “honey,” can all be illegal and considered sexual harassment if a woman decides she doesn’t like it and the man has perpetrated the act. [65] In other words, women have the power to imprison men for "sexual harassment" if they do anything that could be interpreted as sexually suggestive. When you actually delve into the politics of sexual harassment, a different image other than the feminist model of misogyny emerges.
Thank you guys for reading!

2020.08.01 08:12 TejasNair [Weekend Long Read] Representation of Muslims in Malayalam cinema and taking the Riz test

The Riz test, inspired from the Bechdel test and Riz Ahmed’s 2017 speech in the House of Commons on diversity on screen, talks about five criteria to measure how Muslims are portrayed on Film and TV.
If the film/show stars at least one character who is identifiably Muslim (by ethnicity, language or clothing) then is the character:
  1. Talking about, the victim of, or the perpetrator of terrorism?
  2. Presented as irrationally angry
  3. Presented as superstitious, culturally backwards or anti-modern?
  4. Presented as a threat to a western way of life?
  5. If the character is male, is he presented as misogynistic? Or if female, is she presented as oppressed by her male counterparts?
If the answer for any of the above is yes, then the film/TV show fails the test.
We look at Malayalam cinema that is said to be making the most progressive films in India right now and analyse how many films passed with flying colours and how many barely made it and how many miserably failed.
The 50s and 60s had few films that headlined Muslim characters which told normal human stories within the milieu. The 1960 film Umma directed by Kunchako had polygamy as its central theme. There was also Subaidha, Ayisha and Khadeeja in the 60s.
“The new wave sidelined women and Muslim characters. While commercial cinema was under the influence of MT Vasudevan Nair and his Valluvandan characters. Stories around upper-caste Hindu families became the norm. Superstar films were also anti-Muslim,” says CS Venkiteswaran, film academician and author.
Some of the commonly observed motifs of misrepresentation would be Muslim characters invariably lacked education, practiced polygamy and families were largely patriarchal in nature. Women in typical traditional costumes who get married at a young age, bear several children, languish inside kitchens and put up with patriarchal oppression. While men in white skullcaps, goatee, green belts tied around a lungi and white banians, would propagate polygamy, misogyny, were superstitious, economically backward and uncouth.
Statistically mainstream Malayalam films between 80s and 2000 had only a handful of Muslim hero characters. In the action thriller Moonam Mura (1988) directed by K Madhu, written by SN Swami, Mohanlal plays an ex-cop Ali Imran who is assigned for a mission, but his religion doesn’t add any value to the story. Similarly, in His Highness Abdulla (1990), he played Abdulla who eventually wins over the Hindu Thampuran’s heart and marries his adopted daughter. While Mammootty has played the iconic writer Vaikkom Muhammed Basheer in Mathilukal (1990), the evil Murikkum Kunnathu Ahmed Haji in Ranjith’s Palerimanikyam and world war veteran Khader in 1921 directed by IV Sasi and scripted by T Damodaran, based on the Mappila Uprising. Interestingly none of these films were directed or written by those who belonged to the community.
If one goes by Census of India figures, Muslims makes 26.56% population in Kerala and by that count, the Muslim representation in mainstream cinema cannot be counted as enough.
The 1988 Sathyan Anthikad film, Ponmuttayidunna Tharavu, written by Raghunath Paleri, has an elderly Muslim landlord, Hajiyar (Karamana Janardhanan Nair) who doesn’t allow his third wife, Kalmayi (Parvathy) to step out of the house, petrified that a younger man will snatch her from him. Kalmayi in her traditional attire and gold finery is a typical Muslim woman stereotype who seems content with her confinement, which was also a reflection of the society back then.
Amina Tailors (1991) directed by Sajan, reinstates every Muslim stereotype—uneducated, roguish, oppressed women and misogynistic men. Amina is illiterate who learns to read and write for her lover, without her father’s knowledge, while the mother is a mute witness to the father’s boorish, misogynistic behaviour.
Ghazal (1993) directed by Kamal has a heroine, who seems to have put the villagers under her spell with her blue eyes. Despite being madly in love with a young man in the village, she agrees to wed the much-married elderly Thangal (Nasser) to seek revenge for raping her years ago. She ends up killing him and herself on the wedding night as she feels she isn’t chaste enough to be with the man who loves her. Set in North Kerala, the film also adds to labels (polygamy, illiteracy, patriarchy, anti-modern, impoverished) associated with the Muslim community in that region. Thangal’s wife is again a silent observer to her husband’s philandering. But Perumazhakalam (2004), about a Hindu woman and Muslim woman who gets acquainted by an bizarre twist of fateengages us with its heartful human-interest story (which is inspired from real life).
In Vinayan’s Dada Sahib (2000), Mammootty plays the double role of a Muslim father and son. While the son is an army man, the father is a freedom fighter. The son’s surname and religion typically result in him being arrested for espionage. The elderly father meanwhile runs from pillar to post seeking help from the police and government, doling out fiery speeches to prove his patriotism. In return he gets abused for his religion and being traitors historically! It also speaks about a narrative where the Muslim characters were required to prove their integrity and patriotism in a society which kept doubting their credentials (again reflected the society mindset during that time, which surprisingly remains the same). Suresh Gopy who played Muhammed Sarkar in the Shaji Kailas directed FIR (1999) had to resort to the whole good Muslim speech for those who questioned his intentions in the film.
Though in some of the most feted political thrillers of the 90s, Muslim characters are invariably drug peddlers, bomb-creators and anti-nationals. They were either the villain’s henchman or anti-establishment figures scheming against the hero. Or they placed Muslim characters, simply to “represent a community”—like Baputti in Shaji Kailas’ Aaram Thampuran (1997), who is Mohanlal’s buddy and man Friday. While dropping him at Kulappuli Appan Thampuran’s mansion he excuses himself from entering the premise saying—"Namukku paranjittullathu ithreyellu. Ini Bappootti kayari ashudhamakkunnilla.” It’s a sly castiest statement. Jagathy plays Khader Khan in Ranjith’s Rock N Roll, a caricaturish Kozhikode Muslim who lives to eat.
In Priyadarshan’s Kilichundan Mambazham (2003), set in Malabar, the template isn’t free of clichés either. Abdu and Ameena are in love but circumstances force Ameena to be the third wife of a rich merchant, Moidhooty Haji. Haji (Sreenivasan) right from the wedding night comes across as this libidinous man who considers women fit only to have sex, procreate and cook. In one scene he asks Ameena— “You get to eat biryani four times a day? What else do you need? When Ameena keeps postponing their consummation, a frustrated Haji drags his first wife to his bedroom for sex. Finally he gives Ameena the triple talaq so that she can go back to her lover (with an odd Muslim custom as an excuse) and chooses to stay with his first wife. That apart, the film and its actors gave the impression of being part of a shoddy fancy dress party with awfully rendered Malabar Muslim slang topped with loud mannerisms.
In many mid 90s films, Muslim characters were placed to add humour. Cochin Haneefa used to be at the receiving end of quite a few roles like that.
The 2006 Shaji Kailas suspense thriller Baba Kalyani reinstates the favourite Bollywood Muslim stereotype—How Hawala invariably links to Muslims and the Pakistan nexus. In the film Mohanlal’s Baba Kalyani finds out that antagonist, Babu (Indrajith Sukumaran), a college lecturer by the day is a kingpin of a terror organization in the state. He is said to have undergone Jihadi training in Pakistan and is planning a massive explosion.
Vineeth Sreenivasan’s love letter to the Muslim woman’s veil, Thattathin Marayathu (2012) has a hero who is mesmerised by the heroine’s face framed inside the veil. “When she puts it, I am unable to focus elsewhere,” is his constant refrain. The heroine meanwhile lives a sheltered existence along with her divorced sister and submissive father in a home ruled by her misogynistic uncle. When her love affair with the Hindu boy is revealed she is beaten with a belt by the Uncle. The girls (her elder sister is blamed for walking out of an abusive marriage) despite being educated are shown to be mere puppets in a toxic patriarchal space. One can’t deny that a reversed narrative would have resulted in Love Jihad.
“Earlier in Malayalam cinema, most of the villain characters had Muslim names or very rarely Christian names. I once asked this writer why he made that cruel villain a Muslim character? He replied, “It’s just a name, that’s it.” I think that’s the biggest disaster that can happen to a writer. It’s not just a name, that its name is Islamophobia is what we learnt much later. We need to think before we even pick names. When we start procrastinating, writing becomes dangerous,” observes Writer PF Mathews.
In Ustad Hotel (2012) directed by Anwar Rasheed, written by Anjali Menon, the heroine belongs to a rich patriarchal Muslim family where women are expected to cook and bear children. Though she is an architecture student, she agrees to an arranged marriage, and hopes to be “allowed to work” post marriage. Shahana is also seen performing for a rock band at night without the knowledge of her family. While the hero’s sisters though initially are married off, they are later shown to be taking care of the hotel business. And during the beginning of the film the mother is only there as a symbol of procreation (though it can be argued that it’s a reality in many Muslim households). The father is displeased by the daughters she gives birth to and after the son is born, she conveniently dies. The scene where Dulquer Salmaan’s Faizi raises his eyebrows at a Muslim man who admits that the bunch of children rallying around him are his own would again be a stereotype.
"A heroine who portrays a Muslim character wears a burkha, jumps over walls and sings rock music for liberation, or when she goes out for work, the family runs behind her and hands her a hijab (Take Off). There is no attempt to go deep into their culture, thinking or aesthetics," says Parari.
The Murali Gopy scripted Tiyaan (2017) is strewn with celluloid Muslim stereotypes where they draw kohl-eyed hooligans who rape and kill as Pakistani born bad Muslims and the namaaz reading, good Samaritans who walk in the backdrop of Arabic chants as the good ones.
Last year’s B Tech set in the backdrop of an Engineering college in Bangalore is about a group of friends and how the death of their young Muslim friend turns their life upside down. Though a well-intentioned commentary against islamophobia, it dissolves into a middling narrative with cliched social media inspired memes being converted into dialogues.
The ones who passed the test
The first film which went against every single checklist in the Riz test has to be the Muhsin Parari directed and written KL10 Pathu (2015), set in the backdrop of a place (Malappuram) that has never got its due in the movies. If TV Chandran’s Paadam Onnu Oru Vilaapam depicted the regressive reality of how Muslim girls forced into early marriages are left in the lurch once pregnant, others showcased the youth who indulged in bigotry and treason. Even the recently released Amazon Prime web series, Family Man had a Malayali antagonist, Moosa, who hails from Kasaragod and joins the ISIS after his family gets slaughtered in a riot. But in his debut film, Parari debunks every stereotype associated with the district and creates a democratic, fun space. Be it having a progressive, independent fun-loving heroine who wears a hijab without fuss, to men who planned their days around food and football to an adorable Jinn, with kohl-lined eyes, as the narrator. There are lovely undertones of Sufism, in music, architecture and poetry. It’s a smartly written film that digs deeper into the socio-political milieu of the region, where conversations flow freely, friendships are legendary and people are warm and frothy, along with precisely retaining their dialect and portraying their culture authentically. "It did justice to the tagline we used— “Mazha Mayayudey Paryayamanu” which questioned the inclusiveness of the mainstream Malayalam cinema. Also, KL10 Pathu was the first movie in which a Muslim girl in Hijab was depicted unapologetically," offers Parari.
In their next film, Sudani from Nigeria (2018), Muhsin and Zakariya—who makes his directorial debut—achieve the same honesty and integrity in depicting the life of Malappuram residents. The narrative follows Majeed, a Sevens football team manager, and his friendship with an immigrant Nigerian player, who finds himself at the Manager’s home being lovingly tended to by his mother following a broken leg. Considering the landscape, culture and people were always misrepresented, the makers pull all the stops to bring it all back to perspective. Be it their passion for football and food, their ability to open their hearts and homes to a stranger and their quirky sense of humour, naivety and taking pride in their nativity. While there are women who happily thrive in the conditioned patriarchal space, there are also young, financially independent sort who refuse to settle for a partner who aren’t as qualified as them.
“Though I thought that was going the extreme, without a single grey character and a village filled with kind-hearted people. I don’t see a balance there,” says CS.
In the 2017 film Take Off, based on the real life story of nine Malayali nurses who were held hostage by terrorists in Iraq, Parvathy plays Sameera, a Muslim nurse who gets a posting in Iraq. Sameera, who hails from a lower-middle class family, gets married into an affluent, conservative Muslim family where women are expected to take care of the home and children. When she decides to pursue nursing to help her father pay off the loans, the husband and his family don’t take it well, resulting in a divorce.
Sameera is one of the most realistically sketched Muslim female characters in Malayalam cinema — all her battles are fought staying within the system. Even in her husband’s home, it’s not shown as an outright rebellion, but a matter of standing up for herself. She is trying to fit into all the roles as best as she can — be it nurse, wife, mother, daughter or daughter-in-law.
Manju Warrier plays Saira, a postwoman wearing a head scarf in C/O Saira Banu—but nowhere in the narrative does the religion or gender have a say in their character arc. The only reminder would be when she talks about getting beaten up by her father when she was in school for removing her hijab to save a pair of kittens from getting soaked in the rain.
Films like Big B, Anwar, Annayum Rasoolum have characters who don’t fall into Muslim stereotypes. Big B main leads are named with an eye on communal harmony—Bilal (Muslim), Eddy (Christian), Murugan and Bijo (Hindus) are orphans adopted by a good Samaritan Mary teacher. And none of the characters are pigeon-holed because of their religion.
There are interesting unconventional, organic depictions. In Aami, one of the stories in the anthology 5 Sundarikal, Fahad Fasil is a rich Muslim who plays interesting mind games with his wife over the phone during a long journey. While Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi has Dulquer Salmaan belonging to a conservative Muslim family in North Kerala on a journey to find his lover. It also shows his patriarchal and traditional household where the mother is anxious about the son marrying someone outside the caste.
The 2017 romance Mayaanadhi about two star-crossed lovers has a track about a popular film actress who is a Muslim and how her life is controlled by her misogynistic brother. When a clip of her midriff gets revealed in a film, he immediately puts a stop to all her film ambitions. However, one has to note that it's a role seldom given to a Muslim woman on screen.
While the Soubin Shahir directed Parava is a beautifully framed film in the backdrop of a milieu he comes from, Mattanchery and their passion for pigeon racing. It’s a tribute to a subculture and milieu and their ordinary lives where religion never comes in the way of the narrative.
In Aashiq Abu’s Virus, a medical thriller inspired from the Nipah outbreak in North Kerala, the Muslim community are carefully drawn out, there is a lovely spontaneous romance between a young doctor Abid Rehman and his sweetheart Dr Sara Yakub and they hint at the stereotypical demonising the community has to endure when the prime Nipah giver’s lover is questioned about his whereabouts.
“That’s why I say that one of the significant developments in Malayalam cinema in this decade has been the phenomenal presence of Muslims in the industry be in direction, cinematography or other technical aspects which in turn helped in creating a more sensitive and productive narrative for the Muslims in cinema,” maintains CS.
But then it's also true that one of the most poignant gay romantic stories, that too between two Muslim characters can be seen in the recently released Moothon, directed and written By Geethu Mohandas. The love story between Akbar and Ameer is so organically written, enacted and crafted, making it perhaps the most sensitive and politically perfect depictions of Muslims and homosexuality in Malayalam cinema till date.

TECH SPOTLIGHT

This week the spotlight is on serverless for Java. Specifically, we want to focus on the technologies in the JVM ecosystem that make going serverless with Java and AWS Lambda possible. Often when we think about serverless, we default to dynamic languages like Node.js or Python, but the JVM ecosystem is robust, time tested, and well supported by the enterprise and open source communities.
But what about cold-starts? It’s well known that AWS Lambda cold-starts for Java tend to be slower than Node.js and Python. To solve this, we have released updates to AWS Lambda and the AWS SDK for Java that drastically improve the cold start of your application's Java functions. At AWS re:Invent 2019, Stefano Buliani gave one of the highest rated talks about Best Practices for AWS Lambda and Java.
Even more recently, we’ve release Provisioned Concurrency, which enables a function to scale without fluctuations in latency. If Provisioned Concurrency doesn’t fit your specific project, there are many other optimizations you can make to significantly decrease cold start times, such as loading classes during initialization or avoiding reflection.
Several open source projects also are targeting the cold-start issue in serverless and container development, primarily Quarkus and Micronaut. Both of these projects are full-stack frameworks for building modern Java applications, optimized for native compilation. Don't worry, Spring developers, both of the frameworks are compatible with most of the Spring annotations: Quarkus for Spring, Micronaut for Spring.

2020.05.14 13:14 we-feed-the-fire By request: My Recap of the Leaked Tell-All video.

A slow descent into madness: an exhaustive recap of the tell all leak
Supposedly the leaked video (clocking in at 10+ hours) was the second day filming.
I watched the entire thing. This is a rambling list of the thoughts going through my mind while watching, and a fairly comprehensive timeline / summary of events, or at least the juiciest parts. I believe it becomes fairly obvious when my mental state started to decline - I was well into the 5th hour by then.
Part 1: David
The show begins an hour into the video.
A lot of time was spent on David. Asking David the same questions, hoping he’d get a clue. Instead he doubled down on his delusion.
David started in this endeavor by going on two trips with a friend over 20 years ago. He states he did not like it - 25 guys meeting 400 women in a big bar. He said it was horrible - he called the women aggressive and professional daters. He went on another trip with 10 guys meeting maybe 40 women in different cities. He describes receiving catalogs of women and selecting specific ones to meet on the trip. A friend he met on one of these trips introduced him to a web site in 2007.
Lana does not work for the web site or get paid. According to David, the web sites are US sites, they contract through the agency that vets the “girls”. He insists Lana derives no income from the web site or agency. It’s illegal for him to contact her directly? He pays in order to not be scammed.
He has known Lana for 7 years. She was too young at the start - he won’t “date” anyone under 25. He wasn’t talking to Lana for 2.5 years. He’s “dated” 30 girls in Ukraine when he wasn’t talking to Lana. He’s been to Ukraine 20 times. He’s been engaged twice to women over there (and twice in America.)
David says Lana is very poor. Has very few clothes and possessions. She only has five pairs of shoes and gets a new pair of sneakers every 3 years or so. She doesn’t speak English. He bought her an iPhone to talk directly but she doesn’t like the keyboard because of her long fingernails. She can’t talk directly to him on the computer because the agency owns the laptop and monitors activity.
He’s spent $250,000 to $300,000 on “dating” on these sites. He claims he’s a millionaire so the money is no object.
Friends of David appear, say their piece, then disappear.
Cesar appears. David had talked to Maria years ago. Said she was high maintenance.
Yolanda and Usman join in. Usman has poor connection. Usman leaves.
A wild Tom appears. Tom compliments Yolanda’s weight loss. Says he’s not hitting on her, just complimenting her.
Tom doesn’t watch much of the show. Says David is his “fast forward couple”.
Cesar says he visited Maria. Maria wasn’t happy he showed up. But she met him, they took photos, she asked to see his phone and he realized later she deleted the photos. They spent 10 days together, he got a couple of pecks on the cheek and lips? But no intimacy. Specified no tongue. Maria was “pissed off” that he showed up, refused to meet Cesar if the cameras were there. Wanted him to buy her a $500 pair of shoes and $300 dinner.
Tom asks if he packed the chocolate panties. Cesar said he took the beaded candy ones.
Yolanda said Cesar DMd her and left his phone number. Cesar says Yolanda is beautiful and that he “loves chocolate” with a Pervy laugh. But he says he was just reaching out as friends. Shaun asks Cesar if he DMs Tom. Tom confirms that he did, and that the alumni reach out to each other.
Shaun asks Yolanda if she would date Cesar, she replies with an emphatic no.
David went back to Ukraine and met Lana. They kissed, no other intimacy. He proposed, she accepted (they show clips.) Lana is still on the dating sites. David is still on the dating sites because Lana is. Lana is still on the site because that’s where her only friends are, David basically describes her as a shut in with no friends.
At one point later in the show he drops the bombshell “love has nothing to do with it.”
Ed appears. He’s holding Teddy (against the dog’s will) on his lap. Ed shouts into his mic. He yells repeatedly about David being scammed for the better part of 18 minutes.
David gets excitable. Yells about this being bullshit. Yells at Tom that Darcey was still talking to other guys.
The current status of the relationship? David thinks they’re not together. He hasn’t communicated with Lana in 6 days. But their engagement hasn’t been broken. So they’re engaged but no longer together?
Lana refuses to participate because she’s getting hate mail from guys who have seen the show accusing her of being a scammer.
Stephanie appears.
Stephanie says she thinks it’s disgusting that Lana is being discussed like she’s a commodity. Points out that their relationship is transactional. David and Ed are screaming at each other over her. Stephanie Commends David for not worrying about spending $100,000 while Ed freaked out about spending $2.
A clip of David proposing to Lana with a prop fake ring shows. David says the jeweler advises not buying a real diamond because he didn’t know her ring size. Says she wants to choose her own ring.
Return to Ed and David arguing.
Usman appears.
David is getting heated.
Bottom Line: David’s retiring to move to Ukraine, but started the K1 process.
Shaun wraps the segment with David still arguing at the 3-hour mark. Shaun leaves (possibly to drink heavily - I would be if I was her.) I forgot to note that at some point Tom made a remark to Ed about him not being able to see his toes. It was a joke, but went completely missed by everyone else.
David, Ed, Stephanie and Usman chit chat. Usman sings a bit.
Part 2: Yolanda
We resume at 3:30 with Yolanda.
Yolanda had the flu at the beginning of December. She was in a coma for a month and was on a ventilator for 3 weeks. Her kidneys and liver were failing. Her doctor now believes she had Covid-19.
She did not hear from Williams during that time. She heard from him just a couple of months ago. She didn’t tell him about her coma, he was talking about his aunt dying so it “didn’t come up.”
He didn’t reach out directly, he went through “sweetberry” (?) on Instagram to ask if he could contact her again.
Yolanda’s daughter and a PI the daughter hired join in. PI says the accounts have ties to Nigerian scammers.
Usman joins. He knows nothing about Nigerian scammers, doubts they’re Nigerian.
Usman leaves. Darcey joins. She’s wearing a platinum blonde wig, primping a bit, trying to center herself on the bed she’s sitting on. She’s nodding along to absolutely nothing, shaking her head and smiling periodically like she’s involved in a totally different conversation than we are seeing.
Daughter and PI leave. Shaun asks Darcey what she thinks about Yolanda and Williams. Darcey goes into a spiel about being a target and people on IG preying on her. Starts talking about Jesse and Tom. Says she spent a lot of money on Jesse, says she helped Tom financially and bought him clothes and gifts. Goes into a tangent of non-specific items, won’t provide a direct answer on how much she spent but finally claims she spent $2000 on Tom.
Erika appears.
Shaun tries to get back on the topic of Yolanda and Willams. Shaun asks Erika about her opinion on The Williams mystery IG account and the blackmail.
Darcey uses that opportunity to talk about being targeted by a “network of people” that was calculated by “people in different countries to target certain people around the world.”
“Maybe Nigeria was a part of it, Maybe England was a part of it”. After Tom, Darcey says she met someone who targeted her, says it was a couple she knew and Tom was a part of it, says IP addresses traced to Nottingham and there’s a network of people targeting women around the world.
Darcey claims her second time in Amsterdam she was robbed while shopping after Jesse told her to leave her passport if she was going out shopping. Later says pickpocketed. Implies that the robbery was a setup by Jesse.
Shaun tries to redirect the subject back to Yolanda and Williams.
Lisa appears.
Lisa jumps right in with her expertise about Yahoo Boys, G-Men and grooming people. Darcey drops off and Usman reappears.
Lisa’s gravelly voice takes on a fake Nigerian accent as they yell “baby love” at each other.
Lisa goes on about her social media expertise. Explains the three different cultures of Nigeria. She tells Yolanda to join the Facebook Group SSA: Scamming Scammers Action that Lisa is a big part of.
They convince Yolanda to try to call Williams on speakerphone. No answer.
Lisa is also an expert in African and Nigerian accents FYI.
Erika leaves. David reappears.
Lisa dominates the conversation. Keeps recounting conversations and events of hackings and stuff.
Lisa starts talking about Blood Rituals. Sacrifices. Money rituals. Voodoo dolls. Kidnappings. Killing people to bring luck in scamming people. They believe in black magic and juju. Lisa and Usman keep interrupting each other. Usman has never heard of this. Lisa insists this is real. Go to SSA on Facebook, all the proof is there.
Yolanda, David and Shaun are stunned silent.
Usman is trying to fact check Lisa’s completely far-fetched theories. Lisa purses her beak.
Finally, Shaun redirects.
Yolanda says she’s done. If she hears from Williams again she’s done.
Yolanda is getting DMs all the time offering to FaceTime her. David tells her to go get her Groove back in Jamaica. Yolanda and David both get DMs encouraging them to hook up since they’re both in Vegas.
We are 5 hours 10 minutes in. Let’s see a clip! We see Lana before she met David. She’s at the gym. She’s walking around Kiev in a silver puffer jacket and Nikes. She using her iPhone (with her short nails) to take pictures. She’s shopping for makeup. She’s sipping a latte in a cafe while typing on her laptop. She’s talking to a friend on her iPhone. She talks about America. She knows that you can get married quickly in Las Vegas. She tells her friend she has an exciting day tomorrow “I’m meeting an American.” Her friend asks if he’s wealthy.
Shaun points out the inconsistencies in Lana’s apparent poverty and David’s understanding of her circumstances. David says “that’s not real”.
We spent the next 10 minutes or so with Yolanda, Usman, Lisa and Shaun trying to talk some sense into David. It doesn’t work.
Shaun leaves for a break.
Ash appears. We spend the next while discussing quarantine. Ash hadn’t heard about Yolanda being sick, his eyes get wide when he hears her coma tale.
They’re talking about lockdowns and restrictions and being able to go where you want. David thinks they’re talking about Ash being able to visit the US on his Australian passport.
Lisa’s ex-husband just got out of prison.
David lives in a rental house that’s being sold in a month.
Yolanda asks if people read their tweets.
Lisa has a stalker with 25 accounts. Lisa now has her phone number and address. She’s going to have her arrested and “put charges against her”.
David gets death threats.
Back to Yolanda and the Covid.
David leaves.
Tom returns. He asks how many bottles of lube Lisa and Usman used raw dogging it. She said none - I’m guessing she just peed on him a la Dinyell.
More R-rated banter. Lisa tells Tom to ask about Usman refusing to join the mile high club.
Ash looks stunned into silence. Maybe a bit frightened. He’s retreated to his nothing box.
Usman tries to explain about the 70%, that it’s a B and a compliment. Tom asks why she paid twice the going rate for a goat.
Lots of goat talk. Peeing goat talk. Showering the goat. Walking in sandals through mud and goat shit.
Tom makes a crack about not being the only cast members showering with animals. Ash asks about Ed showering with Rosemarie’s father? Then his feed goes out.
Lisa starts talking about gross food. Tom are goat brain in Albania. Lisa starts everything with “Usman, tell them about the time...” then just talks over him to tell the story herself.
Stephanie appears.
Ed appears.
Usman leaves. Lisa tells them about the armed convoy everywhere they went. Ed wants to know about the goat. More goat tales.
7 hour 10 minute mark.
Part 3: Lisa and Usman
Shaun is back with Lisa and Usman. We lose Usman.
Lisa had surgery.
She hurt her baby toe before going to Nigeria. Ruptured a blood vessel. It swelled up in Africa. Returned to the US with a dead/dying toe. Got infected, went gangrenous, was amputated.
Usman returns.
The next segment is insufferable.
Usman says Lisa calls him a N***** frequently. Lisa screams about opening a can of worms.
Usman asks if American women are all like this.
Lisa and Usman are married but keep blocking each other.
Lisa is Usman’s first serious relationship.
Lisa freaks out about women on Usman’s comments and in his DMs.
Says she’s seen the other girls Usman dated, they’re “3 times my size”.
They fight about Trish Playtas.
Lisa talks over Usman. Yells, curses, threatens.
Enter Giant and Aba (?) after 25 minutes of toxic bullshit.
Lisa talks about getting “gangbanged”. (I think she means ganged up on, but she’s so cringe who can tell.)
Lisa has a screaming match. Hangs up because she was “mistreated and disrespected”.
Enter Lisa’s friend Nikki.
Nikki screams about disrespect for the next forever. Lisa returns.
There’s endless raspy screeching about bitches, clowns, motherfuckers and more disrespect. Fuck you. Fuck outta here.
Shaun loses all control.
Aba and Nikki scream at each other some more.
Shaun gives up. She is writing something just below the screen. I suspect it’s her resignation letter.
Finally Shaun redirects the conversation. She brings up the polygamy.
If Lisa has an egg and can tote it, Usman doesn’t want another wife. If Lisa can’t squat and hatch Usman’s offspring, he will take another wife.
Cue Lisa’s expertise on polygamy.
Clip Roll: the night before the wedding, Lisa storms off and disrespects Usman’s brothers the night before the wedding.
Lisa cackles.
Avery and Ed appear.
Usman and Lisa keep arguing.
Shaun asks Avery’s perception. Avery asks “where is the love?” All she sees is them screaming over each other and assert themselves.
Before Lisa can respond Ed jumps in.
Lisa calls the kettle black and says Avery and Ed aren’t portrayed well.
Ed started to watch the show after he decided to be on it.
Ed compliments Usman for being calm and respectful and not using any foul words.
Lisa Cackles. Ed calls her a bull in a china shop “no disrespect”. Says he thought she was the definition of a narcissist, but says she’s actually the definition of delusional.
Lisa interrupts. Usman starts singing. Lisa and Ed scream over each other. Lisa tells Avery to shut up, says she went on Ed’s live drunk and making an ass of herself. Ed keeps screaming “delusional”. Lisa calls Avery a drunk. Avery tells Usman “not all American women are like that”, Lisa rebounds with “that’s why Ash dumped your ass.” Ed tells Usman there are many more nicer women.
Ed: she treated you like a piece of shit. She treated you like a slave.
Lisa: you are a piece of shit!
Ed: you made America Sick!
Lisa: Ed Fuck You! Fuck You!
Lisa: you abused Rose to go on this show because no fucking other woman would! You fucking used her (x 5). Shut the fuck up.
More screaming over each other.
Usman begs Ed to calm down.
Lisa: you’re going to let this fucking pervert who’s got charges for sexual harassment... you’re going to let this idiot come at me with the fucking charges he’s got? This fucking pervert has been grooming women. The women are coming out of the woodwork saying Ed has molested them, he’s groomed them, and god only knows what the fuck else he did to them.
More screaming.
Ed: the internet is fake!
Lisa: Harry (producer) remove these two right now!
Lisa calls them Thing 1 and Thing 2 and demands Harry remove them.
Ed gets cut.
Lisa continues to scream at Avery about glass houses.
Tom appears.
Usman is yelling now.
Shaun tries to gain control.
Tom: I was nervous delivering that letter to Darcey but coming in to this conversation is wild!
Shaun brings up the polygamy subject again.
Lisa might move to Nigeria for The Other Way.
Shaun disappears.
Avery drops.
Lisa says “Tom, this is all for show. It’s a dog and horse, pony show I call it.”
Tom blows smoke up her ass. His idea of love is apparently jealousy, anger and disrespect. He says it’s obvious they love each other because apparently only people truly in love can be that hateful and vicious and angry to each other.
Shaun is back. Darcey appears. Usman is singing. Darcey is swaying to Soja Boy, slurring, “do it big! Lisa, Be the queen!”
Darcey’s been in the sauce.
Usman tells Lisa to cover her bra.
More second wife talk.
Tom asks a question about what kind of second wife Usman would have. Darcey says something. Shaun asks Lisa a question. Usman freaks out and screams “Tom asked me a question, let me answer the question”. This leads to Lisa screaming at Shaun about disrespecting Usman, screams at the producer “you better tell this hostess to shut her mouth” shut up! Shut up!”
Usman keeps yelling. Shaun trying to calm everyone.
Lisa: Barb! Barb! Barb! Do you hear me? It’s time to cut her now! Barb! Cut her now! Barb! Cut the fucking thing, cut it now! She’s disrespecting Usman! Fucking stop it! Stop it barb! Fuck off!
Darcey looks like a confused bobble head.
Lisa hangs up.
Usman and Darcey talk about Trish Playtas.
Darcey: things are don’t differently in America, I’ve been in the entertainment industry way before Tom, way before Jesse.
Usman starts to explain going live with Trish.
Lisa returns.
Part 4: Wrap Ups and “where does your relationship stand?”
Shaun turns to Darcey and Tom, asks where the future of their relationship is. Lisa and Usman respond loudly, not letting them talk.
Finally, Lisa and Usman are gone.
Tom: friends maybe blah blah blah great mom, good person, wish you the best.
Darcey: my journey, my daughters, my brother who passed blah blah blah don’t want toxic negativity
Ash and Avery return: same question
Ash is worried about his hair being cut off on the screen.
Ash started the journey with the intent to propose. Says he loves her. Breaking up was the hardest thing. Future is going to be looking after his family.
Ash answers the question in a concise, straight forward manner.
Just kidding. He uses a lot of words to absolutely avoid answering anything.
Avery says this is a hard question to ask someone who just separated. She trails off. I think... I don’t... I wanted... honestly...
Erika and Stephanie return: where do you stand?
Not even friends. Can they ever be friends?
Stephanie says best case is friends from afar.
Erika says they’ve been friends and fought many many times. She came in today wanting to speak and wasn’t able to do that, but doesn’t hold any hate. It’s going to be hard to see any of this in a positive light.
Erika didn’t get a change to express that she took a big step coming out to her parents then Stephanie dumped her the next morning.
Stephanie came out to her mom too apparently, but it wasn’t like Erika’s coming out (receptive and kind).
Pick up lines:
Asking what they’ve been doing during the quarantine, will air at the beginning of the show.
(Erika makes earrings!)
Shaun has to rephrase the question to Stephanie to ask specifically about... HER ILLNESS!
Bet you didn’t see that one coming.
Yolanda wrap up: no more online dating. She’s going to meet men at the market or the casino. Old school.
Ed wrap up: who cares.
Ok. I guess we do.
Shaun asks about the shower. I just can’t listen to him anymore. Then she asks about the first night they were intimate. I’m going to barf.
Ed takes full responsibility for “not the things I did, but the way I did them”. Rose is mad at him right now. She wanted to reconcile February 9.
Ed is taking a break from dating (sorry ladies!) but Rose taught him to love again and “she didn’t destroy me like my first marriage did.”
His mom is moving in with him. But she’s a nurse so hasn’t moved in yet. Ed’s mom is a nurse caring for a young child with a tracheostomy.
Ed sucks, but a round of applause for Mother Ed is deserved.
David wrap up:
David is going to retire earlier than planned because of the recession resulting from the quarantine.
Shaun asks about the first kiss.
David says something about bowling. He bowls 4 strikes with Lana.
The girls in Ukraine love bowling but don’t get to do that. So he takes them. He bets kisses for every strike he bowls.
Lana is upset over the publicity from the show. Gets physically ill in front of the camera.
If she won’t come to the US or dumps him, he will live part time in the Ukraine - 3 months at a time - to continue dating women there.
It’s over. Thank God.

2020.03.12 12:10 Moni_CSM Entitled sister takes all my parents money, puts my dement mom deep into dept and then tells me that I am greedy and mentally ill

So, this is my second post here. It is very very long. This time it is about my entitled sister (ES). She has a diagnosed borderline disorder, so I don´t know whether she is really entitled or just mentally ill.
I am 44 years old (F). My sister is 1,5 years younger than me. As children we went along very well. When she became a teenager, the problems started. Her puberty was very hard, including drinking, stealing and taking drugs. Later, with about 15 years, she could change school and found a group of friends there, and everything went well, so we thought. Later She did a two years training for a high-qualified medical job and generally was on a good way. As both my sister and I had experienced bad abuse by our grandfather, my parents apparently felt guilty and gave my sister everything she demanded. I guess I could also have gotten everything I wanted, but I didn´t want.
I started to work when I was 18 and moved out to live in my own apartment when I was 19. I did not have much money and often had to struggle a lot. ES became very self-centered. She was 18 and still did the medical job training. My parents had a house with two apartments, and ES moved into one of the apartments. She had a living room, a kitchen, a bedroom, a bathroom and a big room as atelier because she was painting and sewing as a hobby. My parents paid all that. They gave her the apartment, they paid her car, they gave her pocket money, money for clothes and even paid her holidays with friends in France.I was living in our capital city then with exceedingly high costs for living and decided I would also find a job near my parents home and move in again to save some money for a special training that was a dream of mine. My parents were happy to have me back and thought that my sister and I could share that second apartment, as it was so big. Before ES sister moved in, a family with 3 people had been living there. I asked ES if she could please empty the atelier, as I wanted to move in. She refused. She said it was HER apartment (even though she did not pay one cent rent for it) and she could not tolerate anyone living in her privacy. I was annoyed but kept my peace and moved into my parents apartmen, back into my old small children´s room.
I went to work, ES did her training and resided like a queen upstairs and did what she wanted. I had brought two elaborate dresses with me. One I only used for stuff like concerts and posh events. As I rarely go to such events, I did not use that dress very often. The other dress I had bought for Medieval markets. There is such an medieval event in the neighbour town every two years. so I also did not wear that dress very often. The medieval event came, and I wanted to take my dress, but the dress had vanished, together with my dress for concerts. I kept looking for the dresses and eventually asked ES where my dresses were. She just shrugged and told me: "You don´t wear them. So I took them and cut them and altered them and made dresses for my best friend from them." I was shocked and shouted: "You did what??" She looked at me with big eyes, pretending not to understand my rage. She said: "You don´t wear them. I have neer seen you wearing the dresses, so I took them." She seemed to be perfectly at ease with that. She had not awareness of doing crap. Everything had to be about her. She did not recognize or respect boundaries. Once, as a teenager, she cleaned her room and threw everything that she had not use for into my room. She told me I could get what I wanted and get rid of the rest.
She got to know a man from Nigeria and 6 weeks later decided to marry him. We all told her that a relationship needs longer to develop and that she should wait. She told us we were rassists and would begrudge her happyness. As the guy had come as refugee with a false name, she had to get married in Nigeria. Again, my parents paid everything: the travel to Nigeria, the wedding, and the huge bribe to get him out of his country legally. Things with him went rather well, as he found a job, and they moved out and away to a big city. I moved up to her apartment, and I paid rent to my parents. Not much, but was utilities and far more, and I paid my own food and car. When ES had moved out she had taken everything she needed and just left all garbage and all the stuff she did not want any longer. ES is a hoarder, like my father was, and very messy, so I spent the first days decluttering and cleaning the apartment. My parents never demanded her to do that because they knew she would not.
She lived with her husband and things were fine for some time. Then she got a baby, and her husband refused to give her any money. In Nigeria, he said, women were supposed to work, do all the household and raise the kids. ES went to my mom for money, which is perfectly ok for me. I would never have raised my voice against this. She was a mom in distress, and my parents financed her life during that hard time. Her husband started to cheat on her and beat her, and they got a very bad and filthy divorce. She talked very bad about him and told us all to drop contacts. I reminded ES several times that she had insisted several times to marry this guy after some weeks, saying that she had gotten to know him so deeply as other people don´t get to know each other in years blablabla. She was not happy when I told her that. He was the bad guy (well, he was, but nobody had forced her to marry him) and she would not listen to anybody telling her that HER decision had been wrong.
She was a single mom and got social welfare money, and my parents supported her very much. Again, I did not mind. It is important to support people in need, especially single moms with small children. After a while she had a new life partner, and they married. My sister went back to work and things started to relax. She still came to my parents a lot for money, but I did not mind. It was their money. And, of course, it is not like I never got anything. Every now and then, they also paid some repair for my car, or gave me money for my birthday and Christmas. When I wanted to upgrade my job, they paid a computer course and an English course for me. So it is not that I got nothing. She got a lot more, and that was ok for me, as she had a small child and was struggling with all sorts of mental issues and physical illnesses.
Her new husband worked as assembly worker for an automobile company and eventually lost his job because he caused trouble as he behaved like a works council member even though he was none, telling people off and fighting for all sorts of stuff. He tried to be self- employed afterwards for 1,5 years as a sales representative for toys, but it did not work. He did not earn money, and after the failure, he got a job as delivery driver. All the time my parents supported ES and her husband. They gave hundreds of Euros every month, they paid car rapairs, tax councellors, even new cars. My brother-in-law then got a burnout and stayed at home for 2 years. ES got pregnant again and had a second child. She was very happy as she had lost some pregnancies before, and she also stayed home. They both got social welfare money, but it never was enough. They took on bank loans and got very deep in dept. The dept was about 40.000 Euros. And still they came to my parents to pay bills. My father mortgaged his house to free ES and her husband of dept, but soon enough they were deep in dept again.
My sister´s health problems got worse. She had an autoimmune disease and other physical issues, mental problems, and she was addicted to weed, which cost them a lot of money. She made a habit of getting deep into problems and then demanding her family to solve the problems. She didn´t do her tax declarations for years, and then demanded my husband and me to come ASAP and solve her shit when the fiscal authorities were threatening consequences. They moved to new apartments, and everytime my mom and me were there for some days to clean up her old apartment, declutter it and generally bring the apartment into a state of decency so that she could hand it over to the landlord again. Once she ran into a man on a bike when she turned with her car and did not see him. She honestly tried to convince us that it had been the cyclist´s fault and wanted us to tell her that she was not to blame. I did not, and she was cross. She had my father sort out all the legal stuff and financial compenstaion for the biker. She had and has a huge problems with taking on responsibility. No one ever made her take on responsibility and maybe this is why she can´t.
The job center paid my brother-in-law a retraining as a computer specialist for system security. The job center paid the training, gave him money for rent and food, and still it was not enough. I have no clue why money never lasted, but they relied on my parents more then ever. My father regularly complained to me that every week ES came with her family, and my mom would pay for refueling their car and then bought food for the next week. My father said that he was spending 800 Euros a month on ES and her family, plus money for car repairs etc. ES claimed that in exchange they were helping in the household, cleaning, doing garden works, but they definitely did not. They did not help a bit. They came, then ES dropped her little son on my mother´s lap and went to sleep. They ate for free and left more mess by the time they left again. Later ES claimed that they worked hard for the money the got by doing household chores, but they did nothing, just creating more work and more mess.
My father was really pissed by that time and demanded that ES let my husband help her with finances to free her of dept, but she refused. I told her to file for private bankruptcy, but she also refused. She asked my father to take another credit to pay her depts. He said he would only do that when she accepted help from my husband to prevent further dept, and she refused again. And then my father did something really stupid: one year before his death he got another bank loan amounting to 30.000 Euros to free my sister of dept. He paid her depts and started to pay back 700 Euros to the bank every month.
He was having lung problems, and shortly after taking on the credit his health detoriated. He got weaker and weaker. Due to lack of oxigen he developed symptoms of dementia and psychosis. At the same time my mom started to drink lots of alcohol. She had been drinking every day for at least 35 years, and not she literally drowned her depression and her load of caring for my sick and demanding father in alcohol. Within no time she got the symptoms of Korsakow´s syndrom, which also caused her to go fully into dementia. So, within some weeks we had two parents who were helpless. They refused to go to a nursery home, and they refused any external help. I got a cleaning woman three times, and they sent her home. I got a nurse to bath them, and they also refused her help. My parents were not rich, but wealthy, it would have been easy to get help. But they expected help from family and friends. That was ok in theory, but they refused any plan, any structure. ES lived a 1,5 hours drive away, and I had to drive 50 minutes to get to them. So we offered to make a plan, when ES would come and when it was my turn. The neighbours offered help and my aunt, so we thought we could cover the days: my sister´s turn in the weekends (she had been there all the weekends anyway), me two times a week, and neighbours and my aunt could then care for them the other 3 days. Unfortunately, it did not work.
My father got into mental issues more and more due to lack of oxigen, and he was sitting at home with his telephone, calling whomever he wanted for help and entertainment right now. It was a really hard time. I was working and had two small children (5 and 8 years old at that time). My father went to hospital every day by ambulance, as he could not breath, and then insisted on going home again. And everytime he came home he wanted me to be present. It was hard. I had to neglect my children. Often my elder daughter would come home from school to find 5 Euros and a note from me saying she should go to a fastfood restaurant round the corner for lunch. She was 8 years old. Often I would have some other mom pick up my smaller daughter from kindergarden and bring her home, so that my 8 years old "big girl" could take care of her younger sister, as mommy was away saving granddad from the evil hospitals and doing household chores for the grandparents.
My sister also came regularly. She sat down with my parents, held their hands, sang with them, gave them kind words. She told them everything would be fine again, they would recover blablabla. When I came, I came to work. I walked their dog, went grocery shopping, went to the pharmacy to get their medications, did the laundry, tried to clean up a little, and I organised neighbours and relatives who lived in the same village as my parents to take turns in cooking lunch for my parents and making sure they ate it. So my sister came to be kind and entertain them, and I came to work. I was the uncomfortable one, the one to make stress. We discovered that my parents had not paid bills for months and that they had not handed in any bills to their health insurance.
I was not there on the day they gave ES their bank cards and access to their online banking. I really don´t know how ES did that, if she convinced or guilt tripped them, or if it had been their idea. I don´t know how you could give a person who had been deep in dept the last years full access to your money. She had the bank access for three months, when I got my father´s legal guardian. A doctor had finally seen my father´s psychosis and had a judge take away my father´s legal capacity. I was made his legal guardian and got access to his bank account. I was really shocked when I saw that ES had taken 30.000 Euros in just three months from my father´s account alone. I have no idea how much she had additionally taken from my mom´s account. At about the same time, ES took my mom with her to take care of her, as my father was detained in hospital, this time forcefully.
I confronted ES with what she had done, but she showed no remorse. Quite the contrary: she went mad at me, saying that it was my mom´s money as well and that I had no right to confront her. She said that my mom had agreed to her taking all the money. I was really angry. I said: "our mother doesn´t even remember her grandchildren´s names, she forgot where she lives and how old she is. She is DEMENT, and you tell me that you took that money with her approval."
She just answered: "Our mom is not dement, she is just stressed a little. She will recover." I was so frustrated and helpless. Then ES told me that I was the greedy one, that I was always talking about money, and that I had no right to decide anything concerning our parents´ money. She went as far as telling me that it was ME who had the borderline disorder. She started giving me messages from my "spirit guides", who had to speak through her as my mind was blocked and as I was not ready spiritually. She did and said so much BS, but would never see what she was doing was immoral. I told her to keep her hands off my father´s bank account. Why did I do that? Well, my parents had not paid bills for months, and my sister only paid the bills with my parents´accounts when they gave her a bill. But when cleaning I found about 45 open bills for all kind of stuff, and payment reminders. I spent many days sorting the bills out, paying bills and requesting copies when I saw a reminder and had not bill for it.
My parents had a private health insurance, so bills for hospitals and ambulances had to be paid first and then sent to the insurance for reimbursement. I could not send the bills to the insurances directly, as my mom had to do that. And my mom was "held hostage" by ES. So I sent them the invoices to have them refunded. Maybe you can guess what ES did? I had paid the bills from my father´s account, over which I had the sole power of disposition as his legal guardian, and she had the refund be transferred to my mom´s account by the insurance, so that ES had the power of disposition on the money. That was another 25.000 Euros she stole. I was fuming, but could do nothing. I could have applied for legal custodoy for my mom, but I was already at my breaking point with working, raising kids and caring for my lethally ill and psychotic father. I knew I could not burden myself with being the guardian for my mother and thus fighting ES day and night for money. I thought that maybe I would do that later, when my father had died.
It was not only bills to be paid. We knew my father would die, so I needed to save money for the funeral. And, as I have written before, my father was a hoarder and his huge house was in a dreadful state. He had not done any renovations for 30 years, the house needed to be decluttered, cleaned and renovated. I had an agent there to evaluate the house, and he said that we needed to invest about 100.000 Euros for renovations. Besides, every month 700 Euros were taken from my father´s bank account to pay back the credit for my sister. I knew there was no way paying house renovations from the money that was left, but I tried to keep the money together to pay bills, funeral, the decluttering of the house and the loan rates for my sister. ES kept telling my that I was a greedy and impudent person for keeping back the money, as both my parents owned the account. I was so angry. Why couldn´t she understand the necessitiy for saving that money?? I tried to explain to her why she could not have the money, but she did not understand. I suppose that she wanted to do what she always did: Take the money and leave the responsibility to someone else. I was so sad and disappointed. She really would take everything and then let me pay for all the expenses from my own money. I was furious.
My father died, I organized the funeral and the funeral reception, I went to chose the tomb stone and had stone surround renovated (it was an old grave which already "hosted" my grandparents). After that the real work started: decluttering my parents´ house. It was a big house with two levels plus a basement and a big storage room under the roof. Really every room was filled completely with stuff from my father´s hobbies. His woodwork stuff alone filled three rooms. ES and her husband had told me they wanted to declutter and renovate the house themselves, and then lease two apartments. Yet, as they lived a 1,5 hours drive away and had no money and no inclination for work, they soon dropped their idea and we decided to sell the house. I contacted two decluttering companies for prices, but both would take over 10.000 Euros, so I dropped that. We could not afford that as my sister had taken every spare money, claiming it was for my mom.
I set to work, and it got my fulltime job for the next weeks. I got all sorts of people to come and take what was still useable. I told ES that she had to come and get everything she wanted before a certain date, and of course she did not come. I had to put all activities on hold. Finally she and her familiy came with a rental van and took everything they wanted. Then they left. Later I got a huge telling off from her, as my husband had taken some metal shelves from my father´s office for our basement, and charity had taken the washing machine and the dryer. It did not matter to her that it was AFTER they had come to collect stuff. She told me that the van had been full and that they could not have taken more, and that she had told me about the washing machine and the dryer. So my husband handed over the metal shelves to her, and I called the charity organisation and told them to bring back washing machine and dryer. It was really embarassing.
I spoke to all sorts of people to come and get what they needed. A woman came to get electronic stuff, a man got to take books for charity, another guy came for old metal. Charities came to take furniture, clothes and kitchen stuff. People came to take tools from his workshop. I opened the house for all his friend and for all relatives to come and take whatever they wanted as a memory. And after that we hired 6 people for a complete day, early in the morning to late into the night, to get the rest stuff out. I rented huge garbage containers that were brought with trucks. We loaded 4 containers (containing 3-6 tons of garbage each). I organised the containers to be brought and then picked up again. I paid the people, yet after that working day there was still stuff left. So my husband and I spent another 3 complete days in this house, decluttering. In the storage room I found 6 suitcases full of baby clothes that ES had dumped there years ago and then forgotten. The clothes were not packed, but lying around. I sorted and packed them and brought them to charity in my car. My husband and I loaded another 2 huge containers and then had the municipal administration collect a load of bulky waste. The neighbour tried to help and drove to the recycling depot and brought my father´s hazardous waste (that is batteries, colours and lacquers). My counsins and my aunt finally swept the house thoroughly to clean the floors a little, and they removed spider webs. After that I was done. ES and her husband did not show up once.
I spent about 6000 Euros on this decluttering event for the helpers and for the container service. 600 Euros I took for myself to go on a 3 days wellness vacation after that huge strain. I´ve got an innate malformation of my respiratory system, and inhaling dust and dirt for three days had not done me good. At this time ES contacted me to tell me that they needed a new car because now they had my mom and needed a bigger car. She had found one for 5000 Euros and wanted the money. I could have cried because she still did not understand that things had not been fully paid yet. I gave her 1000 Euros, and she called me arrogant and pretentious because I assumed the right to deal with the money.
We decided to sell the house, and had a buyer right away. Again terror started, as my sister acted as my mom´s representative for selling the house. Every time the buyer needed something (catastral map excerpt, architectal measurements, energy certificate), ES did was she always did: She called me and cried and told me she had tried to get the things but failed. So I set to work again and got the stuff within quite fast (to her credit I have to add that I got the things faster than she would have gotten, because I was lucky to meet people I knew from my childhood in the administration offices and they helped me through unofficial channels).
So we sold the house. As my mom had been my father´s sole heir I only got a mandatory part of 15% of the house. We bought new living room furniture from that money. It was not much, but we got really nice furniture and I am happy every day when I look at it. My mom and with her ES got the biggest part of the house sale. After paying everything, every bill, the funeral, the tomb stone, I handed the bank accout back to my sister. There were 500 Euros left on it. I had taken 600 Euros for my work with decluttering, 300 Euros for expenditures when my father was in hospital for 3 weeks, as he missplaced his stuff and demanded me to buy socks, watches, newspapers and sweets every day. And I had decided to have one car repair paid from my father´s account, as present from him. I knew I would not have any inheritance left, I would get nothing, so I treated me with the car repair amounting to 1600 Euros. I don´t think this is unreasonable. When decluttering my father´s house I found a lot of bills and letters from dept collection. I found out that my parents had given about 110.000 Euros to ES the previous years. It would have been enough to renovate the house.
ES got the account back and decided she wanted to have a house. Again, I don´t know how she did it, but she got a bank loan from an online bank in my dement mother´s name and bought an old, tumbled down house in one of the best areas in her town. They wanted to renovate it. The credit period is 20 years. When they took the credit my dement mom was 70 (it was 2 years ago). They took all my mom´s money to try and renovate the house. My mom has a very good pension, and yet her accounts are deep in dept now. I told my sister that she could have all the money when she cared for my mom. We agreed that I would do a renunciation of inheritance from my mom, I would get nothing, she could keep everything with the precondition that she was the one responsible for caring for my mother.
That was two years ago. Now my mom is deeply into dementia. She is a full- time job. ES is on her last legs. They stopped renovating the house, as her husband now has a job, and they have a 8 years old son. My sister is drained and ill and smokes weed every day. The house is so filthy and dirty that your shoes will stick to the ground when you walk there. It´s dreadful. Her son lives in a dirty mess and is entertained with television and computer games all day. He is diagnosed with ADHD and has someone from youth authorties come every week to do nice things with him, like going swimming.
When I visited in December, ES told me that she was drained and could not do it any more. Although I had vowed to myself not to care for my mother as we had an agreement, I consented to taking my mom with me for 2 days, so that ES could relax. On this day her husband complained to my that ES was smoking weed all day, not caring for my mom properly, and neglecting her son. I informed youth authorities and they came and imposed all sorts of rules and restrictions on ES. She was furious and accused me of being a terrible person and not helping. She said that surely I must be glad that it was not ME who had to care for our mom. She said that everything was on her back, and that she got no help. I told her that she had taken everything, every money, that she had taken far over 110.000 Euros, and she exploded. She said that they had been working for the money in my parents´ house, and that now everything went into the house. Her house, not mine. She told me that I am a liar, and a dreadful person, not helping, always talking about money. She said that in return it was ME who was taking money from mom´s account. That is not true, by the way. When my children were born, my mom did a banker´s order to pay a small amount of money every month into saving accounts for my kids. Some years ago she approached me if she could pay some daycare or hobby for my kids, as she paid daycare for my sister´s son. My kids got riding lessons from grandma, and still get them, at it is a standing order in her bank account. So, mind you, it is not that we get nothing. I am just so angry that me sister took so much, wasted so much mony on a house that is a ruin and then tells me that I don´t help and take money.
I discovered that all my mom´s life insurances are gone (wonder where they could be), except one that is a funeral costs insurance that will not cover the actual expenses of a funeral. At the moment I am trying to get hold of this insurance to being able to pay for my mom´s funeral once her time comes. My sister is not helping. Documents vanish, she doesn´t want to talk because: "Mom is still alive". I have the strong feeling that she wants to cash that insurance and leave me to pay all funeral costs. She makes me feel guilty about that. She tries to guilt trip me into being ashamed for not wanting to pay funeral costs from my own money. I am so done with her. Once all that is over, I will cut contacts. Surely ES will not be able to live without my mom´s money, and the prospect of being contacted every now and then for paying something or resolving the mess she made is not very attractive. Sometime I wonder whether I am being selfish and greedy. Some people are really good at gaslighting. What do you think?
